Savannah, GA - Sand Gnats starter LHP Brad Wieck set new career-highs with 6.1 innings pitched and 11 strikeouts in a 5-2 Thursday at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Lexington Legends used eight stolen bases on the night to take the series opener.

The Gnats (12-20) scored first, picking up a run in the bottom of the first inning. SS Luis Guillorme walked and scored on an RBI double into right field by centerfielder John Mora for a 1-0 lead.

The Gnats' lead did not last long as the Legends (14-19) answered back with two runs in the top of the second inning off Wieck (0-4). Wieck ran into trouble with two outs in the second. He hit a batter and then gave up an RBI double and a single to put Lexington in front 2-1. The Legends did not trail again.

Wieck struck out a career-high 11 batters before departing after hitting his pitch count with one out in the seventh. The Texas native was saddled with the tough-luck loss, his forth this year.

Both teams scored in the fourth inning to make the score 3-2.

The Gnats had a chance to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, but an on-target throw from Alfredo Escalera nailed Mora at the plate to keep the Legends in front 3-2.

Lexington tacked on single runs in the seventh and ninth innings. Legends' starter Pedro Fernandez (3-0) earned the win.

The Gnats and Legends continue their four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 PM. The Sand Gnats will start RHP Casey Meisner (2-1, 1.78), while Lexington will send LHP Foster Griffin (0-0, 7.20) to the hill.
