GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds got back into the win column with a comeback victory in Greensboro, but the Grasshoppers evened the score with a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap.

The doubleheader began promising with a pitchers' duel between Brian Gonzalez of Delmarva and Jose Adames for Greensboro. Neither starter allowed a run until the sixth inning when Arturo Rodriguez delivered a two-out RBI single for 1-0 Hoppers lead. Gonzalez finished with one run allowed on three hits in six innings, his first quality start with Delmarva.

As they have done several times this year, Delmarva battled back in their final at-bat. Jay Gonzalez and Steve Wilkerson set the table with a walk and single to put the tying run at third base. Alex Murphy delivered in the clutch with an RBI single to right field to tie the game.

After a strikeout and wild pitch, Greensboro intentionally walked Jomar Reyes to load the bases. Riley Palmer made Greensboro pay with a go-ahead RBI single to left field, taking a 2-1 lead. Elier Leyva drove home another run on a groundout, establishing a 3-1 advantage.

Donnie Hart pitched a clean seventh inning for his league-best eighth save of the year. Gonzalez earned the win, his second of the season, while Sam Alvis took the loss in relief for Greensboro. The win snapped a five-game losing skid for Delmarva.

Game two did not have quite as much drama as Greensboro built an early lead and never looked back. The first five Grasshoppers reached base in the first inning off Dariel Delgado, making a spot start for Delmarva. Delgado wil well to limit the damage to two runs, stranding the bases loaded.

Austen Smith belted a two-run home run for Greensboro in the third inning, his eighth of the season and most in the South Atlantic League. The Grasshoppers added another in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.

The Shorebirds could not find success off Drew Steckenrider and Josh Hodges. The two Grasshopper pitchers stymied Delmarva for just one hit in the game two shutout.

After the doubleheader split, the two teams will play game three on Friday night. Two right-handers square off, Matthew Grimes (2-1, 4.82) for Delmarva and Tyler Kolek (3-1, 4.10) for Greensboro. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at NewBridge Bank Park.
