Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C. (July 31, 2011) - Jonathan Sanchez threw eight innings of three-hit ball to help the Edenton Steamers (23-3, 42-11) shutout the Wilson Tobs (9-17, 24-30), 6-0 at Fleming Stadium on Sunday night.
The shutout marked the eighth time that the Tobs have not been able to get a run across the plate in a game this summer, and it was the fourth time Wilson has been held scoreless by Edenton. The Tobs are now 2-13 against the Steamers in 2011.
Edenton first got on the scoreboard in the top of the second. Right fielder Brian Blasik was issued a one out walk, and he came around to score from second on a single to left by 3B Vinnie Mejia. Another RBI single with one out in the third made it 2-0 Steamers at the end of 2 1/2.
Edenton doubled its lead in the sixth. With runners at second and third and two outs, LF Brett Christopher hit a chopper down the first base line. The chopper was snagged behind the bag by Tobs 1B Steve Nikorak, but his throw to RHP Clay Murphy, who had run over to cover the bag, was beat out by Christopher. The infield hit by Christopher plated both runners and made it a 4-0 Steamers lead.
Edenton added two insurance runs in the eighth thanks to an error and a couple of wild pitches. Getting tagged with the loss for Wilson was Murphy (2-2), despite striking out 10 in 6.1 innings. Murphy was responsible for four runs, five hits, and five walks. Sanchez (3-0) got the win, as he struck out three and walked one in the eight innings he threw.
The Tobs battle the Steamers again tomorrow night at Historic Hicks Field in Edenton. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm. Wilson will close out the regular season Tuesday night at home against the Columbia Blowfish. Call the Tobs box office for tickets at 252-291-TOBS.
