Sanchez Dominates Tobs in Steamer Win

WILSON, NC - Jonathan Sanchez pitched eight solid innings, allowing only three hits to the Tobs all game long, en route to earning his third win of the season in the 6-0 Steamer victory.

Clay Murphy made his ninth start for Wilson and tenth appearance overall of the season. In the second Brian Blasik walked with one out. Tim Saunders was hit in the head by a pitch that pushed Blasik to second base; Saunders was later taken out of the game. Vinnie Mejia picked up his 22nd RBI of the season with a single to put Edenton up 1-0.

Edenton added a run in the third on an RBI single by Zach Stewart that made it 2-0. The single scored Brett Christopher, who singled earlier in the inning.

The score remained 2-0 Steamers until the top of the sixth, when they plated two more runs with the benefit of only one hit. With one out, Vinnie Mejia walked. Kevin Whitehead walked and was then retired on a fielder's choice by Ryan Brenner. With runners on first and third Brett Christopher hit a two-run, infield single to make it 4-0 Steamers.

In the seventh Murphy was lifted for Tyler Saltsman and the two pitchers combined to hold the Steamers scoreless in the inning.

Edenton, in the eighth, against Saltsman scored two more times. Blasik singled to begin the inning. Blasik then stole his way to third and came home on a throwing error by the catcher Keith Morrisroe. With one out, Vinnie Mejia walked. A wild pitch moved Mejia to second base and a Kevin Whitehead ground out moved Mejia to third base. Mejia scored on another wild pitch by Saltsman to make the score 6-0 Edenton.

Sanchez dominated the Wilson Tobs through eight innings of work, earning his third win of the season. Sanchez sprinkled three hits, all singles, in his eight innings and he allowed no runs. He walked one and struck out three in the 6-0 Steamer win.

Murphy lasted 6.1 innings in the ball game, allowing five hits and four runs. Murphy walked five and struck out ten Steamers in the losing effort.

The defeat by Edenton officially eliminated Wilson from playoff contention. Edenton welcomes in Wilson tomorrow night for the final time in 2011.
