TinCaps stall in 5-1 loss

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps couldn't get it going offensively as they fell to the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 5-1, Saturday at Parkview Field. Jon Alia went 3-for-4 with Fort Wayne's lone RBI.

Fort Wayne went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

For the second straight night, the Hot Rods jumped ahead in the top of the first. Chris Murrill led off with a single, snapping an 0-for-17 skid, stole second and scored when Tyler Bortnick followed with an RBI single.

In the top of the fourth, Bennett Davis drew a leadoff walk and Kyle Spraker singled. Julio Cedeno then doubled to the wall in left to drive in Davis. Ty Morrison singled to left to make it 3- 0. Fort Wayne LHP Jose De Paula worked out of further trouble to keep it a three-run game.

The Hot Rods kept charging in the fifth. A two-base error put Ryan Wiegand in scoring position for Spraker, who ripped an RBI double to left to push the Hot Rods' advantage to 4-0.

The TinCaps didn't get on the board until the sixth. Nate Freiman drew a two-out walk and Edinson Rincon singled to put runners at the corners. Alia followed, smashing an RBI single to center to make it 4-1.

Bowling Green came right back with a run the next half inning. Mark Thomas was hit by a pitch to lead off and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Davis. Hot Rods LHP Kyle Lobstein (5-3) picked up the win, dealing 5.2 strong innings. De Paula (3-2) took the loss.

Fort Wayne fell to 0-2 in the second half, 36-36 overall. Bowling Green stayed perfect at 2-0 in the half, 33-38 for the year.

The TinCaps and Hot Rods (Class-A Tampa Bay Rays) finish the three-game series Sunday at 3:05 p.m. Fort Wayne LHP Pedro Hernandez (1-3) goes to the mound opposite Bowling Green All-Star RHP Wilking Rodriguez (4-5).
