Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs were never able to get their bats going as they were shut out by the Cedar Rapids Kernels 5-0 Saturday night at O'Brien Field. The loss drops the Chiefs to 1-1 in the second half and 39-32 overall on the season. A starting pitching duel between the Chiefs' Su-Min Jung and Kernels' Stephen Locke kept the oppositions batters guessing and unable to produce any runs. The two pitchers gave up zero runs on only eight total hits for both teams combined through five innings. Even when runners got on base, the double play ball became their best friends getting them out of a few jams. Jung's night was finished after five shutout innings, as he gave up six hits, striking out one, and not issuing a walk. Ronny Morla took the mound in relief of Jung in the sixth inning. He struggled and gave up the first run of the game. Morla struck out the first Kernel batter he faced and made the mistake of giving the speedy Mike Trout a free pass to first with a walk. That mistake hurt the Chiefs as Trout stole second. After a Matt Long strikeout, Jean Segura singled to centerfield to score Trout and take the lead, 1-0. Steven Grife entered the game in the seventh inning for Morla and continued the struggles for Chief relievers. Michael Wing singled to center, Justin Bass singled to right, and Carlos Ramirez hit a three run shot to left field. After facing seven batters, Grife finally got out of the inning with the Chiefs down 4-0. Larry Suarez gave up the fifth score of the night to the Kernels in the ninth inning. Ramirez singled to left, a single by Jon Karcich put runners at first and second, and a single by Trout scored Ramirez making the score 5-0. The story of the night was the performance by the Kernels starter. Locke pitched eight shutout innings and only gave up three hits throughout the night. He did not issue a walk and had six strikeouts. The most impressive stat was that he only faced 25 Chief batters and the lowest possible number he could have faced was 24, thanks to double plays. Jung pitched five shutout innings while giving up six hits and striking out one. Morla (1-2) pitched one inning giving up one run on one hit, striking out two, and walking two to take the loss. Grife threw one inning giving up three runs on four hits and striking out one. Larry Suarez pitched two innings, giving up one run on three hits and striking out one.
