Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - An impressive 5.2 innings from left-hander Nick Czyz helped guide the Clinton LumberKings to their first win of the second half, 6-1 over the Beloit Snappers at Alliant Energy Field. Czyz tied a career-high with seven strikeouts, besting Beloit right-hander and Masonville, Iowa native B.J. Hermsen.

Czyz (W, 1-0) allowed an RBI single to Steven Liddle in the fourth as the Snappers tied the game at 1-1. That would be the only run allowed by the left-hander in his first start with the Kings since coming back down from high-A High Desert over the All-Star Break.

Meanwhile, the LumberKings tagged Hermsen (L, 4-2) for four runs on nine hits over 6.0 innings. Daniel Carroll snapped a string of seven-straight retired with a drive to the berm in left. The solo blast - his fourth of the season - put Clinton ahead, 1-0. The Kings retook the lead with two runs in the fifth inning as Luis Nunez grounded into a double-play with the bases loaded, allowing Kalian Sams to score. Nick Franklin followed up with an infield single off Hermsen on the mound that scored Carroll for a 3-1 lead.

From there on, Tim Morris provided all of the insurance. He ripped a solo home run - his third - into the Lumber Lounge to lead off the sixth, then snuck a two-out, two-run single by shortstop James Beresford in the seventh.

The bullpen combination of right-hander Taylor Lewis (H, 1), left-hander Brian Moran (H, 4) and right-hander John Housey shut down the Snappers to four hits over the final 3.1 innings.

Carroll finished 3-for-3 with the home run and three runs scored, while Morris went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Gabriel Noriega also had an impressive night, going 3-for-4 in the nine spot.

The LumberKings (1-1, 38-33) and Snappers (1-1, 38-33) conclude the series tomorrow afternoon at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (5-2, 2.31) makes his 13th appearance, 10th start for Clinton. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
