TinCaps Power over Cubs 15-5 in Series Finale
August 27, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: When Jimmy Herron hit a two run single in the bottom of the 3rd inning to cut the Fort Wayne TinCaps lead to just one, the South Bend Cubs liked their chances to take the series finale at Four Winds Field. But just an inning later, the TinCaps had different ideas.
The middle innings were the Achilles heel for the Cubs on Monday night. With 12 combined runs by the TinCaps from the 4th through 7th inning, Fort Wayne demolished South Bend 15-5 and took the series three games to two.
It was a solid pitching matchup to end the series as right hander Jeffrey Passantino went against the number seven overall pick in this year's MLB Draft, Ryan Weathers. Weathers shined through 2.2 innings despite giving up two unearned runs. He struck out five batters.
Passantino had trouble locking in as he gave up six runs with four being earned. 11 hits by the TinCaps packed the score sheet on Monday.
The knockout blows came all from shortstop Gabriel Arias. The 18-year-old hit for the cycle against the Cubs. It was the first Fort Wayne cycle since 1993. Arias went 5/6 with two singles, a double, a triple, a home run, five RBI, and two runs scored. Arias was a human stat sheet as he led the TinCaps to victory.
For the Cubs, Delvin Zinn extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 2/3 day. Zinn reached base a total of three times by also adding a walk.
With the loss, the Cubs will move into an off day tomorrow before opening a three game set at home against Bowling Green on Wednesday. First pitch against the Hot Rods is set for 7:05 PM.
