SUNDAY: The TinCaps lost to the Captains, 6-4, in Eastlake, Ohio. After Fort Wayne took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, Lake County answered with 2 in their half of the fourth, 2 more in the fifth, and 1 in the sixth to go up, 5-1. The 'Caps rallied a bit with a 2-run Tirso Ornelas homer in the eighth and an Esteury Ruiz solo shot in the ninth, but the Captains added an insurance run in the eighth for themselves and staved off the comeback bid with the tying run at the plate.
PINCH "HITTER": Manager Anthony Contreras is off Monday and Tuesday (the Padres allow Minor League managers and coaches to take a limited amount of time off during the season to spend with family). Kevin Hooper, San Diego's Minor League Infield Coordinator. Hooper, who played in the majors for the Tigers in 2005 and '06. "Hoop" also filled in for Contreras @ Great Lakes last season from Aug. 5-8 when the 'Caps swept a 4-game series. Hooper is in his 3rd season with the Padres after previously managing the Wichita Winguts of the independent American Association for 7 years from 2009-15. He was a 3-time Manager of the Year, going 422-270 (.610), and led Wichita to the 2014 American Association title.
HOT CAPS: The TinCaps have won 7 of their last 9 games, with their only Fort Wayne has outscored its opponents 41-26 during this stretch.
JULY 2: Today marks the annual start of the international signing period. The TinCaps currently have 9 players on their roster who were signed as international free agents, including 6 who were signed by the Padres on this date in 2016: RHP Luis Patiño (Colombia), INF, Luis Almanzar (Dominican Republic), INF Gabriel Arias (Venezuela), INF Justin Lopez (Venezuela), and OF Jeisson Rosario (Dominican Republic).
ARIAS RISES: Shortstop Gabriel Arias was hitting .200 after June 7. Since then, Arias is 2nd on the team in average. Over his last 18 games, Arias has hit .290 with 2 doubles, a homer, and 9 RBIs.
SUWINSKI IN STRIDE: In 8 games in the 2nd half, Jack Suwinski is 9-for-26 (.346) with a double, 2 triples, a homer, 3 RBIs, and 3 walks.
LEAGUE LEADERS: Jeisson Rosario is tied for 4th in runs (50), tied for 6th in walks (43), and 8th in OBP (.388)... Esteury Ruiz 4th in SB (24)... Travis Radke is 3rd in saves (10).
ADVANCED STATS LEAGUE LEADERS: Jeisson Rosario is 9th in BB% (14%) and 11th in BB/K (0.73)... Tirso Ornelas is tied for the 8th lowest Swing & Miss% (7%) and tied for 12th in BB/K (0.69).
BULLPEN BOOMERANG: TinCaps relievers have posted a 2.92 ERA over the last 62 games since April 25. In this time, the 'pen has been led by Travis Radke, Caleb Boushley, Evan Miller, and Ben Sheckler. Through the first 19 games of the year, the bullpen had allowed 60 ER in 72.1 IP for a 7.47 ERA.
ORNELAS ON BASE: Tirso Ornelas' 27-game on-base streak came to an end Thursday night @ Lake County. The on-base streak was the 2nd longest active streak in the MWL at the time, and it stands as the longest such streak for a TinCap this season. (The longest in the league this year: 31 games, Michael Beltre, Dayton.) From May 24-June 27, Ornelas hit .297 with a .425 OBP. He had 6 doubles, 3 triples, 4 homers, and 16 RBIs during the run. Maybe most impressive, he walked more times (19) than he struck out (16).
