Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
South Bend, IN - Cedar Rapids made their clutch moments count behind a fantastic outing from Brent Headrick in a 6-1 win over South Bend in game four of their road series. With the victory, the Kernels reduce their magic number to nine as they improve to 36-19.
Headrick was phenomenal, tossing 5.2 innings of one-run ball to earn his sixth win of the season. The southpaw struck out seven and scattered six hits while walking one. He threw 58 strikes on 87 pitches with 13 whiffs.
South Bend plated a run in the first, but Headrick worked out of a two-on jam to keep it a one-run game. Kyler Fedko singled with one down in the top of the second, later scoring on a Wander Javier RBI groundout. Aaron Sabato put the Kernels in front with a solo shot in the third, blasting one out to right.
Insurance came in the fifth as Javier and Soularie both singled. Christian Encarnacion-Strand lifted a lazy fly ball into foul territory down the right field line. Both runners tagged up as the first baseman made the catch, drawing a wild throw to third that sailed into left field to plate Javier. Soularie alertly kept his eyes on the left fielder and noticed he was slow to get the ball in, taking off for home and scoring to make it 4-1.
Javier tripled to open the seventh followed by a Dylan Neuse walk. Two batters later, Encarnacion-Strand crushed an RBI double off the left field wall then Sabato plated Neuse with a groundout.
Miguel Rodriguez and Bobby Milacki combined to toss 3.1 scoreless frames, closing things out by working around four baserunners.
Game five of the series is set for 7:05 p.m. ET on Saturday in South Bend.
