Madden Shines in DH Split

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps used a three-run homer by Trei Cruz, a two-triple performance by Wenceel Perez, and a dominant performance by pitcher Ty Madden to split a doubleheader with the Lansing Lugnuts with a 6-1 win before falling 7-2 in the nightcap in front of 7,416 fans Friday night at LMCU Ballpark.

Madden, the Whitecaps starter and Detroit Tigers No. 6 prospect excelled in the first game, allowing just one hit through six shutout innings as Cruz blasted a three-run home run in the victory. Perez becomes the 17th Whitecap to triple twice in the same game and the first since former Whitecap and current Detroit Tigers outfielder Derek Hill accomplished the feat in 2017. Meanwhile, the offense struggled in the nightcap, finishing just 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and squandering a pair of bases-loaded opportunities in the loss.

Both pitching staffs dominated through the first four frames of game one, as Lugnuts starter Jeff Criswell held West Michigan scoreless on three strikeouts. The Whitecaps exploded for six runs in the fifth inning - featuring the three-run homer from Cruz - taking a commanding 6-0 lead. Elvis Alvarado replaced Madden after six scoreless frames as Austin Beck pounded a solo home run before Euribiel Angeles struck out to end the game, closing the book on the 6-1 victory.

Lazaro Armenteros roped a two-run single to put the Lugnuts on top 2-0 in the second inning of game two. Lansing plated a run in the third inning before striking for three in the fourth - highlighted by a two-run home run from Tyler Soderstrom - increasing their lead to 6-0. Meanwhile, 'Caps pitching coach Dean Stiles was ejected from game two, making him the second Whitecaps ejection in as many games. Lansing starter Stevie Emanuels lasted five innings while just allowing one run, as Bryant Packard plated Wenceel Perez before Jose King flew out with the bases loaded, trimming the lead to 6-1. Alexander Campos roped an RBI single in the fifth before King responded with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, but it was too late as the 'Caps fell short 7-2.

Madden (3-4) collects his third victory in the first game, as Criswell (2-3) suffers his third loss, allowing six runs through 4.2 innings of work. Emanuels (3-5) secures his third victory in game two, as Keider Montero (3-2) suffers his second loss, allowing five runs through 3.1 innings pitched. The Lugnuts record moves to 21-34 as the 'Caps win-loss mark stands at 25-30.
