PORTLAND, Ore. ‚¬" The Portland Timbers officially opened their first preseason training camp as a Major League Soccer club this week at adidas America. Under head coach John Spencer, the Timbers began the first of eight weeks of preseason training before the club ‚¬â„¢s season opener on March 19.

A group of 22 players reported for the opening day of camp and participated in a workout consisting of fitness-based activities ‚¬" running, stretching and core work. For Day 2 on Tuesday, the team utilized the facilities at adidas and moved their workouts indoors.

Roster players reporting for camp included goalkeeper Troy Perkins, defenders Eric Brunner, Futty Danso, Kevin Goldthwaite, David Horst and Rodney Wallace, midfielders Kalif Alhassan, Jeremy Hall, Peter Lowry, James Marcelin, Adam Moffat, Darlington Nagbe and Ryan Pore and forwards Bright Dike and Eddie Johnson.

Also joining in as training commenced were Freddie Braun, Adin Brown, Josh Cameron, Doug DeMartin, Quavas Kirk, Tony McManus and Steve Purdy.

Prior to Tuesday ‚¬â„¢s workout, the group gathered and posed for their individual official team head shots taken by team photographer Craig Mitchelldyer.

The Timbers will train at adidas America throughout the week before heading to Ventura, Calif., for an eight-day camp in Southern California.

Update: Preseason match schedule

The Timbers today added a pair of matches to their preseason exhibition schedule. On Tuesday, Feb. 8, the team will play against the LA Galaxy as part of its training camp in Southern California. While in Arizona later in the month, the Timbers will square off against the Montreal Impact on Wednesday, Feb. 23; Montreal will join MLS as an expansion side in 2012. Additionally, the club ‚¬â„¢s exhibition match against the San Jose Earthquakes on Feb. 6 has been removed from the preseason schedule.

Timbers, Papa Murphy ‚¬â„¢s play host to PGE Park Community Tour Saturday

The Timbers and Papa Murphy ‚¬â„¢s play host to a second set of Community Tours at PGE Park on Saturday, giving fans a comprehensive update of the on-going renovations at the stadium for the up-coming MLS season. The 30-minute tours, presented by Papa Murphy ‚¬â„¢s, begin at 12 noon and are open to both season ticket holders and the general public. A complimentary lunch from Papa Murphy ‚¬â„¢s, the official pizza of the Timbers, will be provided following the tour.

All tour participants are required to pre-register for the event; space is limited. Season ticket holders for 2011 can RSVP by contacting the ticket services department at ticketservices@portlandtimbers.com. Non-season ticket holders can RSVP by emailing ticketsales@portlandtimbers.com. Members of the media are invited to attend the event.

‚¬Å“We Are Timbers ‚¬Â Fan Photo Shoot

The ‚¬Å“We Are Timbers ‚¬Â billboards, featuring Timbers and soccer fans, have been up for weeks across the Rose City. And now, local fans can strike their own No-Pity pose during a ‚¬Å“We Are Timbers ‚¬Â fan photo shoot at the Portland Timbers Downtown Team Store from Thursday through Saturday.

Fans are invited to the team ‚¬â„¢s store during business hours (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) to have their ‚¬Å“We Are Timbers ‚¬Â photo taken by a professional photographer for free. The Team Store is located at SW 6th Ave in downtown Portland. Click here for additional details.

Club announces new adidas Timbers Training Center

The Timbers and Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District (THPRD) have formed a 10-year partnership that is highlighted by the construction of a comprehensive training facility ‚¬" the adidas Timbers Training Center ‚¬" for the MLS club in Beaverton, Ore.

The facility, located on THPRD property off 112th Ave. near Highway 217, will include a new natural-grass field to be used exclusively by the Timbers and a synthetic turf field designated for public use.

The adidas Timbers Training Center will feature a 6,000-square-foot indoor facility that will include locker rooms, training areas and office space for the MLS club. Click here for more information.

Timbers staff gives back during tree-planting event

On the morning of Jan. 20, more than 40 Timbers employees, including owner and president Merritt Paulson, general manager/technical director Gavin Wilkinson and head coach John Spencer, spent the morning repopulating a Portland hillside with 60 young trees in conjunction with Friends of Trees.

The event kicked off the club ‚¬â„¢s ‚¬Å“Score a Goal, Plant a Tree ‚¬Â initiative in 2011, working with Friends of Trees ‚¬" a nonprofit pillar partner for the Timbers ‚¬â„¢ Stand Together community outreach program. The Timbers and Friends of Trees will plant a tree for every goal a Timbers player scores during the upcoming MLS campaign. Click here for photos and video from the tree planting.

Portland kicks off inaugural MLS campaign March 19

The Timbers kick off their inaugural MLS campaign on Saturday, March 19, on the road against the defending-MLS Cup champion Colorado Rapids; kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. (Pacific). The Timbers play host to the Chicago Fire in the their home opener on Thursday, April 14, at 8 p.m.
