PORTLAND, Ore. - Behind a late second-half brace from midfielder Foster Langsdorf and goals from forward Ben White and midfielder Romilio Hernandez, the Portland Timbers U-23s recorded a convincing 4-0 victory over Puget Sound Gunners on Friday night at Buckman Field in Portland, Ore.
With the win, Portland (4-1-2, 14pts) extended its unbeaten streak to four straight games (2-0-2). The win marked the Timbers U-23s third consecutive shutout and fourth clean sheet of the 2015 (PDL) season. Friday's matchup marked the first of two regular-season meetings between Portland and Puget Sound Gunners this season with the Timbers U-23s traveling to Puget Sound on June 28.
Langsdorf tallied back-to-back goals in the 86th and 90th minute, adding to Portland's lead late in the match over Puget Sound (0-5-3, 3pts). Chasing down a long ball from goalkeeper Collin Partee, Langsdorf sprinted towards the box, outracing Puget Sound defenders and beating goalkeeper Cody Jewett to notch his first goal of the season. Minutes later, Langsdorf scored his second goal firing a left-footed shot off a pass from midfielder Ismaila Jome. Langsdorf, who is a former Timbers Academy standout, recorded four shots while midfielder Sam Werner registered a team-high five shots.
Following a scoreless first half, the Timbers U-23s came out aggressively, registering 15 shots, including seven on goal, in the second half. Timbers U-23s forward Ben White opened the scoring in the 67th minute firing a shot off a deflected ball from a Puget Sound defender into the right corner of the net, giving Portland a 1-0 lead. Following Langsdorf's brace, midfielder Romilio Hernandez tallied the final goal of the match, stealing a ball from a Puget Sound defender and firing it past Jewett.
The Timbers U-23s outshot Puget Sound, 22-11, and limited the Gunners to just two shots on goal in the match.
Following Friday's match, the Timbers U-23s play their final regular-season home game of the 2015 PDL season against Seattle Sounders U-23s at McKenzie Stadium in Vancouver, Wash., on Sunday, June 21; kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (Pacific).
