San Jose Earthquakes News Release

SEATTLE, Wash. - The San Jose Earthquakes won for the second time in 2015 at CenturyLink Field, defeating Seattle Sounders FC 2-0 in a Western Conference battle. Matias Perez Garcia scored his first goal of the year and set up Sanna Nyassi for the Quakes' other goal. David Bingham made three saves as the Quakes earned their fourth shutout in the past seven games.

A quick counter brought San Jose the first chance of the match. Nyassi broke out quickly and found Adam Jahn across the field. The big forward slipped a pass through for Shea Salinas just inside the left side of the box. Just as Salinas shot, a Seattle defender stretched to deflect the shot out for a corner.

Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham came up big 12 minutes into the match with a leaping save. Lamar Neagle shook free of his defender 25 yards from goal and unleashed a drive that seemed destined for the back of the net, but Bingham jumped and touched the ball over the bar to keep Sounders FC off the board.

The Quakes struck first on a goal from Nyassi, who returned this week from international duty, in the 28th minute. Salinas got the ball on the wing and dribbled toward the middle and rolled a pass to Perez Garcia. Perez Garcia made some space and poked a ball into the path of Nyassi and the Gambian international made no mistake, smashing a shot past Sounders FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei into the upper corner.

Perez Garcia gave the Quakes a two-goal advantage in the 73rd minute with a great effort, beating two Sounders FC defenders in tight space to score. Cordell Cato, who entered the game at halftime took a pass from Perez Garcia and took off on a long run. He drew two defenders and pushed a pass back to Perez Garcia. The Argentinean midfielder dribbled between two defenders before hooking a shot into the upper corner for a 2-0 lead.

San Jose heads back home next weekend for the California Clasico with the Quakes hosting the rival LA Galaxy on Saturday, June 27 at Stanford Stadium, presented by PG&E. The match is expected to sellout for the fourth straight year with 50,000 fans. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT and the game will air live on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
