Timbers, Seattle Sounders FC Play to Scoreless Draw in Cascadia Clash at Lumen Field
June 3, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Portland Timbers News Release
SEATTLE - The Portland Timbers earned a road point against Cascadia rival Seattle Sounders FC with a 0-0 draw at Lumen Field on Saturday afternoon. With the draw, Portland extended its undefeated streak against Seattle to five straight matches (4-0-1), and eight straight matches (5-0-3) when playing at Lumen Field.
Undefeated Streaks vs. Seattle
The Timbers improved their record over Cascadia rival Seattle to 17-15-7 overall (including playoffs) and 7-8-5 when playing at Lumen Field. With today's draw, the Timbers are undefeated in five straight matches (4-0-1) against the Sounders dating back to Aug. 29, 2021. In that five-game span, the Timbers have outscored Seattle 11-2. Notably, Portland is unbeaten in eight straight regular season matches (5-0-3) when playing Seattle at Lumen Field dating back to August 27, 2017, the longest streak by any team at Lumen Field in MLS history. Before today's draw, the Timbers tallied four straight wins against Sounders FC, marking the first time either side in the Portland vs. Seattle rivalry has won four straight matches against the other in the MLS era. Undefeated at Lumen Field, head coach Giovanni Savarese improved his regular season record over Seattle to 9-5-2, totaling the most wins against the Sounders of any MLS head coach since 2018.
Cascadia Cup Run
Tonight's match marked Portland's third in Cascadia Cup play, in which they aim to defend its 2022 title. Still in contention to do so, the Timbers sit atop of the table with seven points (2W, 1L, 1D) followed by Whitecaps FC with six points (2W, 1L), while Seattle sits at the bottom with one point (0-2-1). Portland claimed its third Cascadia Cup title in club history (2022, 2017, 2012) last year, finishing the 2022 competition with a combined record of 3-0-1 over Seattle (2-0-0) and Vancouver (1-0-1). This season, Portland has a 2-1-1 record with a victory against both Seattle (4-1, April 15) and Vancouver (3-1, May 13), a loss against Vancouver (1-0, April 8), and tonight's 0-0 draw. Evander currently leads the golden boot race in the Cup with two goals after tallying a brace against the Whitecaps on May 13. The Timbers have two remaining matches in the Cup this year, hosting Vancouver once more (Aug. 26), and facing Sounders FC once more on the road (Sept. 2).
