PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers have re-signed defender Josecarlos Van Rankin on loan through the summer with a team option to extend the loan for the remainder of the year, the team announced today. In addition, the club has an option to exercise a permanent transfer from Liga MX side Club Deportivo Guadalajara (Chivas). Van Rankin will occupy an international roster slot pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.
"We are delighted to welcome Josecarlos back to the club. He was a very good addition to our backline last season, and a phenomenal addition to the locker room," said Gavin Wilkinson, general manager and president of soccer for the Timbers. "We're thankful we were able to collaborate with Chivas to make this happen and look forward to working with a talented player and great person like Josecarlos."
Van Rankin, 28, is back with the Timbers after spending the 2021 season in Portland. In his first year in the MLS, the Mexican international logged 27 starts in 33 appearances in the regular season. Van Rankin tallied three assists for the Timbers, all of which helped Portland earn three victories in the regular season (LA Galaxy, Houston Dynamo FC, LAFC).
"Josecarlos is an important player for our locker room. He has adapted within the group perfectly, and he understands our system on the field which is extremely valuable. We're excited to have him back with the team," said Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese.
Prior to joining Portland, Van Rankin played two Liga MX campaigns with Santos Laguna (2019-2021) on loan from Chivas, scoring two goals in 25 appearances (23 starts) across all competitions. The Mexico City, Mexico, native began his professional career with Liga MX side Pumas UNAM (2012-19), where he tallied seven goals and seven assists in 180 appearances (162 starts) across all competitions.
At the international level, Van Rankin has made one appearance for the Mexico Men's National Team, starting and tallying an assist in a 3-2 win over Costa Rica on Oct. 11, 2018. Additionally, Van Rankin has made multiple appearances for Mexico at the youth level, including being part of the U-20 team that won the 2013 Concacaf U-20 Championship and being named to the tournament Best XI.
