Timbers Face Wilmington in Third Round of U.S. Open Cup Wednesday

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers play host to the Wilmington Hammerheads of USL PRO in the third round of the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday at JELD-WEN Field at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).

The U.S. Open Cup match against Wilmington is included as part of Timbers full-season ticket packages as Exhibition B. Single-game tickets, starting at $15, are available for purchase through the JELD-WEN Field box office and online at www.portlandtimbers.com .

The cup match will be broadcast live on 750 The Game, with a video stream available at www.portlandtimbers.com.

All 16 U.S.-based clubs from Major League Soccer, including the Timbers, enter the 2013 U.S. Open Cup in the third round, which began Tuesday night.

The Hammerheads defeated the Austin Aztex of the Premier Development League 2-0 in the second round on May 21 in Austin, Texas, to advance to face the Timbers. Wilmington was first founded in 1996 and competes in USL PRO. The club reached the USL PRO final in 2012 and has qualified for the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. Wednesday's match will mark the fourth consecutive road match for the Hammerheads across all competitions.

The 2013 U.S. Open Cup - the 100th edition of the competition - features 68 teams, marking the largest field in the modern era (1995-present). The tournament includes clubs, both professional and amateur, from across the U.S. soccer landscape; all Division I, II and III clubs affiliated with U.S. Soccer participate in the tournament proper.

The U.S. Open Cup, a single-elimination tournament, has crowned a champion for 99 consecutive years beginning in 1914. The winning team has its name engraved on the base of the Dewar Challenge Trophy and qualifies for the CONCACAF Champions League.
