Charleston, S.C. - The San Jose Earthquakes were eliminated from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night, falling 1-0 to the Charleston Battery at Blackbaud Stadium in a third round match.

After a tight first half, the Battery jumped into the lead on a set piece. Jose Cuevas played a ball into the box and Colin Falvey leapt to drive home a header for a 1-0 Battery advantage in the 74th minute.

The Quakes task got more difficult just a minute later as Brad Ring received his second yellow card and San Jose had to play the final 15 minutes down a man.

Despite being down to 10 men, San Jose applied heavy pressure and nearly equalized the game in stoppage time on a free kick. Chris Wondolowski curled a shot into the box that deflected past Battery goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper and hit the crossbar before being cleared away by the Battery defense.

The Earthquakes continue their road trip this weekend as they travel to Salt Lake City to face Real Salt Lake on Saturday, June 1. The match kicks off at 6:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
