Timbers Exit 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in Round of 32 with 4-3 Loss to Real Salt Lake

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers dropped a 4-3 result to Real Salt Lake in the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday night at Providence Park. Sebastián Blanco, Justin Rasmussen and Jaroslaw Niezgoda all registered goals while Noel Caliskan and Nathan Fogaça tallied assists. Facing a quick turnaround, Portland will return to league play on Saturday, May 13, hosting Cascadia rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Providence Park.

Tonight's Goal Scorers and Playmakers

Blanco scored his first goal of 2023 and his 50th across all competitions. The Argentinian midfielder has recorded three goals and one assist in nine Open Cup appearances (eight starts) all time, including his first two appearances (both starts) of this year. Notably, in 14 appearances (12 starts) across all competitions against Real Salt Lake, Blanco has registered eight goals and seven assists. Rasmussen scored his first career goal for the Timbers tonight. With him and Blanco tallying their firsts of the year, they became the 15th and 16th players to score a goal for Portland across all competitions in 2023. Niezgoda scored his second goal in the competition and third across all competitions this year. Caliskan tallied his first career assists for the Timbers by notching two tonight, earning a second straight start in Open Cup play. This year, including his time with T2, Caliskan has notched three goals and three assists in eight appearances (six starts). Fogaça tallied his second assist of the year for the Timbers.

Notes from the U.S. Open Cup

Tonight's match marked Portland's 37th match in the U.S. Open Cup, dating back to 2004, and was the club's first third match against Salt Lake in the tournament competition. Portland has an overall record of 20-17-0 in the competition and 10-8-0 when playing at home. Notably, the Timbers have advanced to the quarterfinal round four times (2013, 2014, 2018, 2019) and to semifinal rounds in 2013 and 2019. In this year's tournament, five different Portland players scored at least a goal in the two matches played (Blanco, Tyler Clegg, Marvin Loría, Niezgoda, Rasmussen), while four players tallied assists (Pablo Bonilla, Caliskan, Fogaça, Niezgoda).

Goal-Scoring Plays

POR - Sebastián Blanco (Noel Caliskan), 4th minute: Putting pressure on Salt Lake midfielder Pablo Ruiz at the top of the 18-yard box, Caliskan stole the ball and sent it forward to Blanco, who on his first touch hit a right-footed shot into the low left corner of the goal.

RSL - Danny Musovski, 30th minute: Standing near the penalty kick spot, Danny Musovski received the ball from a cross, took a shot that was blocked by Timbers defender Tyler Clegg, but finished the play on the rebound.

RSL - Andres Gomez (Bode Hidalgo), 41st minute: Bode Hidalgo passed the ball to Andres Gomez on the right wing and towards top-right corner of the 18-yard box. Gomez cut and dribbled through two Portland players and shot a left-footed ball from outside the box and into the top-left corner of the goal.

POR - Justin Rasmussen (Noel Caliskan), 49th minute: Caliskan dribbled near the right corner of the six-yard box and cut the ball back towards the middle of the 18-yard box and outside the box. Rasmussen, on his first touch, curled a right-footed ball into the top right corner of the goal.

POR - Jaroslaw Niezgoda (Nathan Fogaça), 52nd minute: Tyler Clegg sent a long ball from near the midfield and into the top of the 18-yard box where Fogaça chested the ball down and passed to Niezgoda. Niezgoda shot a right footed ball near the penalty kick spot and into the goal.

RSL - Maikel Chang (Andres Gómez), 55th minute: Gómez dribbled into the box from the right side and played the ball across to Maikel Chang, who slotted a one-touch right footed shot inside of the post.

RSL - Maikel Chang (Danny Musovski), 59th minute: Musovski crossed the ball towards the penalty spot from the right side of the box. Chang finished with a one-touch shot into the back of the net.

Notes:

Tonight's match marked Portland's 37th match in the U.S. Open Cup, dating back to 2004.

The Timbers have a record of 20-17-0 in the competition and 13-10-0 in the club's MLS era.

Portland is 10-8-0 when playing U.S. Open Cup matches at home.

In 37 matches across all competitions, Portland has a record of 13-15-9 against RSL and 7-4-7 when playing them at home.

Blanco scored his first goal of 2023 and 50th across all competitions, also tallying his first two appearances (two starts) of the year playing in the Open Cup.

Caliskan tallied his first two assists tonight, also tallying his second appearance and start for the Timbers in this year's tournament competition.

This year, including his time with T2, Caliskan has recorded three goals and three assists in eight appearances (six starts).

Fogaça tallied his second assist of the year for the Timbers.

Tyler Clegg and Victor Griffith played their second matches for the Timbers this year, signed on short-term loans from T2.

Griffith led the Timbers in shots with three.

David Bingham made his eighth appearance across all competitions for the Timbers, and fifth of 2023.

Next game

The Timbers will return to league play on Saturday, May 13, for a regular season match against Cascadia rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (Pacific) and will be streamed live on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app in English and Spanish as well as local radio broadcasts, 750 The Game (English) and La GranD 1150AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
