Tim Wood Named Tribe's May Player of the Month

June 7, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians have named right-handed relief pitcher Tim Wood the Tribe's Player of the Month for May. Wood will accept the award -- which includes a custom-made watch from Windsor Jewelry -- prior to Saturday's game against the Rochester Red Wings.

Wood led all Indianapolis pitchers with a 0.31 WHIP and allowed a team-low .066 opponent batting average while pitching in a team-high 13 games in May. Among full-time relievers, Wood led the bullpen with 19.2 innings pitched; while fellow RHP Rick VandenHurk also tossed 19.2 innings, VandenHurk made two starts in addition to a pair of relief appearances. Wood also tied LHP Kris Johnson with two wins in relief.

Wood had endured a rough start to the season, going 1-3 with a pair of blown saves in April, posting a 7.56 ERA. He righted the ship, however, showing signs of the closer who went 2-0 with 23 saves in 40 games for the Indians in 2011. In May, Wood allowed just four hits and one earned run, walking only one batter while recording 19 strikeouts.

As of June 4, Wood is 3-3 with five saves on the season and has lowered his ERA to 2.40, more than five runs lower than it had been at the end of April. In 30.0 innings pitched, Wood has allowed 20 hits, 10 runs, eight earned runs, three home runs and seven walks. His 22 appearances lead the team and his 29 strikeouts are the second-most for any Tribe reliever.

Saturday's game starts at 7:05 p.m. and opens a four-game series against the Red Wings, the Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, which will run June 9-12. Tickets for all Tribe home games are available by going online to IndyIndians.com, calling the Indians single game ticket hotline at 317-269-2282 or by visiting the Victory Field Box Office, open daily at 501 West Maryland Street.
