Gwinnett Stripers News Release
ALLENTOWN, PA. - The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs came back from a 2-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Gwinnett Braves, 5-2, in game three of the four-game series. The G-Braves are now 2.5 games behind the Charlotte Knights in the International League South, as Charlotte won its fourth straight game with a 6-1 win at Toledo on Thursday night.
Things fell apart for the G-Braves in the bottom of the seventh inning when right-hander Buddy Carlyle, after working a scoreless sixth, began the inning by hitting Tuffy Gosewisch with a pitch. Pete Orr then made it safely to first after second baseman Wilson dropped a would-be double play ball at second base. A wild pitch moved runners to second and third, then a balk by Carlyle scored Gosewisch from third to cut the Gwinnett lead to 2-1. Steve Susdorf tied the game at two with a double to right, the hit scored Orr from third. The next batter, Tug Hulett, broke the 2-2 tie with a single to right, in turn he was sacrifice bunted to second by pitcher Tyson Brummett and scored on a double by Kyle Hudson to make it 4-2 Lehigh Valley. Hudson scored on a double by Kevin Frandsen for the fifth and final run of the inning and night.
The G-Braves scored a run in the top of the first to take their very first lead in the series. Tyler Pastornicky singled to right and back-to-back walks issued by Lehigh Valley starter Scott Elarton to Ernesto Mejia and Stefan Gartrell loaded the bases with one out. Felix Pie plated the run with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Pastornicky to make it 1-0. The G-Braves held that lead for most of the game.
Meanwhile, righthander Kris Medlen, in his second start for Gwinnett, was in command as he kept the 'Pigs off the board through five innings.
The G-Braves added a run in the top of the seventh, as Josh Wilson struck a one-out single to center, then advanced to third on a double to left by Luis Durango. Wilson scored from third on a groundout by Pastornicky which gave the G-Braves a 2-0 lead for the seventh inning stretch.
Carlyle (L, 3-1) worked 1.2 innings for his first loss. He gave up four hits, five runs, two of which were earned and walked none while he struck out two. Medlen started the game and worked five scoreless frames and allowed four hits, no walks and struck out four. Dusty Hughes finished the game with 1.1 innings pitched and one strikeout.
Brummett (W, 2-1) grabbed the win in relief, as he worked one inning and surrendered two hits, one earned run and two walks. Elarton worked 6.0 innings and allowed earned run on four hits, while the right-hander walked three and struck out five. Jeremy Horst pitched a scoreless eighth and Phillippe Aumont (S, 5) picked up the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Lance Zawadzki paced the Braves offensively with a 2-for-3 night including a double and a single. The other four hits came from Durango, Pastornicky, Pie and Wilson.
The G-Braves (33-28) continue their road trip Friday night with the final game of the four-game series in Allentown against Lehigh Valley (37-26). Right-hander Jair Jurrjens (3-3, 5.56) is scheduled to start for the G-Braves against the IronPigs left-hander Pat Misch (3-8, 5.01). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Coca-Cola Park in Gwinnett's season finale against Lehigh Valley. Listen to the broadcast on WDUN AM 550 in Gainesville, Georgia with Tony Schiavone calling the play by play.
