Hens Narrowly Avoid Being No-Hit for First Time Since 1977

June 7, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Hens' offensive woes continued as they fell 6-1 to Charlotte on Thursday night. The Hens compiled two ninth inning hits to avoid being no-hit for the first time since 1977.

Charlotte starter Terry Doyle was responsible for the Hens' demise, fanning eight Hens and taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning. Audy Ciriaco led off the ninth with a double for the Hens to break up the no-no. Ciriaco later scored on a Justin Henry single to take away Doyle's shutout as well.

Both starting pitchers cruised through three until the Knights struck first with a three-run homer off the bat of Drew Garcia to take a 3-0 lead. The homer was one of just five hits for the Knights off starter Andy Oliver.

Oliver had a pretty good start himself, allowing three runs on five hits through a season-high 7.2 innings. Oliver also struck out six in the effort.

Austin Jackson lead off and started in centerfield for the Hens as part of his rehab assignment in Toledo. Jackson went 0-for-4, but made a pair of great defensive plays to keep the Hens in the game.

Charlotte added three more runs in the ninth off Rob Waite when Greg Golson blasted one over Austin Jackson's head for a three-run double.

The Hens' bats will look to wake up tomorrow for the series finale against Charlotte. Adam Wilk is set to take the hill for the Hens and first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Game Notes

Prior to this game, the Hens season low for hits was four.

The Hens drew three walks off Doyle in the loss.

The Hens narrowly avoided being shutout for the second time this season.
