Cape Breton Eagles News Release
VICTORIAVILLE- A whirlwind game on a Friday night saw the Victoriaville Tigres top the Screaming Eagles 5-4 in a shootout.
Neither team would ever hold a two goal lead in a back and forth encounter that featured no shortage of talking points. It would be in the ninth minute of action when the game found its first goal, and when it did, both teams would light the red light.
First it was a give and go between Mathieu Sévigny and Enrico Di Cesare that would see Di Cesare finish the play to put the home side up 1-0. Just 42 seconds later Egor Sokolov would tie the game for the Screaming Eagles. Victoriaville would leave the period ahead, thanks to a power play blast from the point from Simon Lafrance.
Special teams would play a factor in the second period as well, as there would be two goals scored at 4 on 4 and almost one at 6 on 5. Early in the period the Tigres were whistled for a penalty, but before Kevin Mandolese could reach the bench for an extra attacker, Leon Gawanke would blast the puck from the top of the right circle to tie the game.
The Eagles would take their first lead of the night with under three minutes to play in the period, courtesy of Egor Sokolov's second of the night. This time it would be the Tigres coming back, as Sean Larochelle would tie the game with less than a second left in the second frame.
With six minutes left it appeared the game could go to overtime, and it would- but not before both teams would score again. Victoriaville would find themselves in deep trouble penalty trouble as Vincent Sévigny was given two minutes for handling the puck. This did not please the fans or Tigres coach Louis Robitaille who slammed a stick on the bench in protest, and was given a misconduct in addition to a two minute bench penalty.
Cape Breton would cash in with the two minute five on three in the final 30 seconds of the man advantage. Ryan Francis flipped a pass to Mitchell Balmas who zapped it by Tristan Coté-Cazenave,
Coté-Cazenave was on the bench for an extra attacker in the final 70 seconds of regulation. Egor Serdyuk had a prime scoring chance, but was denied by Kevin Mandolese. As the puck soared up in the air on the rebound, the puck was knocked down with a Tigre high stick and came down on the ice. The puck didn't immediately cross the goal line, but hit multiple players on its way in. The red light was put on but the referee closest to the net quickly waived it off.
After a very lengthy review, the call on the ice was overturned, and the contest headed to overtime.
The first big chance would go the way of the Eagles, but Balmas would be denied on a breakaway by Coté-Cazenave. The Tigres would have their opportunities as well, a power play as the Eagles were caught with too many men on the ice. But the Eagles killed the penalty off and the game was destined for a shootout.
Neither Mikhail Abramov of Victoriaville nor Brooklyn Kalmikov of Cape Breton could score on their first shootout attempts. Simon Lafrance would score for the Tigres, and Sokolov was denied in his attempt to tie the shootout.
While Brouillette could not solve Mandolese to seal the game, a Coté-Cazenave stop on Balmas would secure the victory for Victoriaville. Coté-Cazenave stopped 32 of 36 shots in the victory, while Mandolese turned aside 29 of 33 in the loss.
The Screaming Eagles finish their road trip on Saturday evening in Rimouski against the Océanic. Puck drop is 5 PM Atlantic time. You can catch all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 7:30 on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com.
