Second Period the Difference in Eagles Loss to Remparts

QUEBEC CITY - A tough seven minute stretch in the second period was the difference as the Québec Remparts topped the Screaming Eagles 6-2 in Québec City on Thursday night.

Neither team was generating much offense in the early going as both teams took some time generating offense. The chances started to pick up for the Eagles when they drew a late period power play. The Remparts were able to kill off the penalty to Olivier Mathieu but he was only just getting out of the box when Mitchell Blamas slid the puck under Dereck Baribeau. With the puck lying in the crease behind the Québec goaltender, Sokolov tucked it into the goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

The Eagles carried the play to begin the second period as well, but the Remparts would flip the game upside down in the middle stanza. It began with a pair of goals Aleksei Sergeev. At 5:49 the rookie import connected with a one timer at the top of the right faceoff circle to tie the game. Two minutes later he would convert a feed from behind the net from Philipp Kurashev.

Just prior to the halfway mark of regulation, Olivier Mathieu would push the lead to 3-1 when he ripped a shot over William Grimard's shoulder. It would spell the end of the night for Grimard and Kevin Mandolese would come in in relief.

Mandolese would be welcomed to the game by a pair of goals by Benjamin Gagné. The Remparts captain ripped a shot through a screen to make it a 4-1 game, and then 30 seconds later (at the 11:59 mark) he'd wire a puck floating back from a faceoff past the Eagles netminder to make it a 5-1 score. That would be all the scoring for the period.

In the third period with Pierrick Dubé in the penalty box for Québec, Screaming Eagles coach Marc-André Dumont would attempt to get his offense going by pulling Mandolese for an extra attacker. The Eagles could not convert on the power play, but Dumont would repeat the move later in the period, and a Leon Gawanke shot from the blueline would put the Eagles on the board again.

However with 2:15 remaining Ryan Francis would be whistled for slashing, and the Remparts would ice the game as Brandon Frattaroli put it by Mandolese for a power play goal, and a final 6-2 score.

Baribeau stopped 30 of 32 shots in picking up the victory. Grimard allowed three goals on 13 shots in the loss, while Mandolese allowed three goals on 14 shots in relief.

Defenseman Alex Falardeau made his QMJHL debut for the Screaming Eagles as an affiliate player. Falardeau was chosen in the fourth round of the 2018 draft by the Screaming Eagles, with the 72nd pick. The Screaming Eagles continue their road trip on Friday night with a visit to the Tigres in Victoriaville.
