Kane County Cougars News Release
CLINTON, Iowa - In honor of Independence Day, the Cougars and LumberKings put on a dazzling display of pitching, as the score was separated by one run for nearly the entire game. The Cougars (11-3, 56-28) held on to a 2-1 victory over the Clinton LumberKings (5-9, 35-48) at Ashford University Field on Friday.
Cael Brockmeyer put the first run on the board with an RBI triple in the second inning and then pitching took over for both sides. Juan Paniagua (5-3) cruised through five innings without allowing a run and only allowing two hits, both to Chantz Mack.
Blake Holovach (4-2) matched Paniagua with seven strong innings but allowed another run in the sixth. Shawon Dunston Jr. became the first walk of the ballgame and the Cougars took advantage of the free pass. Some small ball moved Dunston to third before Kyle Schwarber drove an RBI double for a 2-0 lead.
The LumberKings' offense finally put two base runners on in the bottom of the sixth before Mack's third hit of the day that brought in a run. Jack Reinheimer attempted to make it to third base, but a throw from Trey Martin gunned down the lead base runner and ended the inning with the Cougars still leading 2-1.
Both bullpens took over and continued the show on the mound. Rafael Pineda was perfect for the LumberKings except for a walk in the ninth. Michael Wagner pitched a 1-2-3 seventh before escaping jams in the eighth and ninth. After ending an eighth inning with runners at second and third unscathed, Wagner picked up his second save of the season by striking out Marcus Littlewood to end the ball game stranding the tying run at second.
The Cougars look to guarantee a series victory against the LumberKings on Saturday with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch from Ashford University Field. Duane Underwood (2-2, 2.84) will go for the Cougars against Clinton's Edwin Diaz (2-4, 3.61). The game can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
