In front of season-high crowd, Lugs rally for 2-1 win

LANSING, Mich. - With a backdrop of fireworks beyond the outfield wall, the Lansing Lugnuts (9-6, 40-43) scored twice in the bottom of the fourteenth inning for a 2-1 walk-off win over the Great Lakes Loons (6-9, 40-44) on Friday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The Lugnuts played their ninth one-run affair in the last 13 contests, coming away with wins in six of those games.
After Great Lakes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourteenth, Lansing loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning. First baseman Matt Dean singled to open the frame, and third baseman Mitch Nay reached on an error by second baseman Brandon Trinkwon.
After a sacrifice bunt by Derrick Loveless and an intentional walk to Dickie Joe Thon, shortstop Jason Leblebijian plated the tying run on an infield single to Great Lakes shortstop Dillon Moyer.
The next batter, catcher Mike Reeves, hit a ground ball to Trinkwon, who flipped to Moyer for a force out at second, but the throw back to first was too late, allowing Nay to score the game-winning run from third.
The Loons scored the first run of the night in the top of fourteenth on a two-out RBI single by first baseman Josmar Cordero against Lansing reliever Adaric Kelly (Win, 1-3).
After pitching two perfect innings, Great Lakes reliever Mark Pope (Loss, 1-2) allowed two runs on two hits and the intentional walk in the fourteenth.
Lansing reliever Phil Kish entered in the eighth inning, tossing 4.1 perfect frames with three strikeouts to keep the game scoreless.
Starting pitcher Shane Dawson allowed three hits and three walks with three strikeouts in his five innings. Scott Silverstein pitched the next 2.2 innings, allowing a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.
Lansing center fielder Anthony Alford went 4-for-6 on the night. The 19-year-old is 7-for-15 in three games since joining the Lugs on Tuesday.
The Lugnuts and Loons play the second of the three-game set on Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium, Jimmy Buffett Tribute Night with postgame LAFCU Fireworks. Former Beloit Snapper Brent Powers (2-2, 6.46) will make his first start for Lansing, with right-hander Jonathan Martinez (7-5, 3.20) on the mound for Great Lakes.
