
Mildren Shines in 3-0 Shutout over Beloit

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Beloit Snappers 3-0 on Independence Day in front of the largest crowd of the year at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Ethan Mildren and the Kernels pitching staff held the Snappers to just four hits in the series-opening victory. Bryan Haar smacked a two-run homerun over the wall in left field to begin the scoring in the first inning. Engelb added another run on a wild pitch in the third to secure the 3-0 lead. Dallas Gallant and Todd Van Steensel each added a scoreless inning to complete the winning effort. Beloit dropped its tenth game in a row in the shutout defeat against Cedar Rapids.
Bryan Haar blasted the Kernels in front 2-0 in the bottom of the first by driving in Zack Granite on his 12th homerun of the season. Granite led off the inning with his second triple of the year.
The Kernels offense struck again in the third when Engelb Vielma came across on a wild pitch by Beloit's Kyle Finnegan to make it a 3-0 lead.
Kyle Finnegan (6-6) exited for Beloit after a four-inning start where he allowed three Kernels runs. The starter gave up seven hits while walking two and striking out two batters in the loss.
Beloit reliever Sam Roberts opened the fifth frame on the mound for the Snappers. Roberts tossed two scoreless innings where he allowed two hits on two strikeouts.
Trevor Bayless entered out of the bullpen for Beloit to begin the seventh. The righty completed two innings of scoreless ball where he walked and struck out one batter.
Cedar Rapids hurler Ethan Mildren (3-5) left the hill after seven scoreless innings for the second consecutive start. Mildren surrendered just three hits to Beloit hitters while collecting two walks and four strikeouts in the win.
Dallas Gallant toed the rubber in the eighth for the Kernels and allowed no runs on one strikeout in is lone inning of work.
Todd Van Steensel took the mound for the Kernels in the ninth and collected his eighth save of the year by preserving the 3-0 victory. The right-hander pitched one scoreless frame where he tallied two strikeouts and allowed a single hit.
The Kernels square off against Beloit in game two of the series Saturday at 6:35 p.m. in Cedar Rapids. Fans can enjoy a spectacular FIREWORKS show following the Kernels game Saturday night.
RHP Kohl Stewart (1-4, 2.53) will get the nod for Cedar Rapids while Beloit will counter with LHP Matt Stalcup (0-3, 6.34) in game two. Tickets are available at www.kernels.com.
