Medicine Hat, AB - The Medicine Hat Tigers put up their highest scoring output of the 2023-2024 season with a 12-1 win over the Tri City Americans Saturday night at Co-op Place.
The Tigers opened the scoring on the power play as Hunter St. Martin (Edmonton, AB) would beat Tri City starter Kyle Kelsey for his 10th of the season at 6:33. Tyler MacKenzie (Red Deer, AB) & Hayden Harsanyi (Calgary, AB) would draw assists. Despite a power play by Tri City shortly after, Tigers goaltender Zach Zahara (Rockyview, AB) would turn away all eight American shots to help the Tigers carry the 1-0 lead to the first intermission. Tigers alternate captain Rhett Parsons would get the crowd involved with a spirited tilt with Americans forward Jake Sloan during the first helping momentum stay in the Tigers favour heading to the middle frame.
A six-goal 2nd period would bust things wide open, and it wouldn't take long in the second period as St.Martin was at it again 37 seconds into the period for his second of the night and 11th of the season to make it 2-0 Tigers. Oasiz Wiesblatt (Calgary, AB) & Gavin McKenna (Whitehorse, YT) would supply the assists. Tomas Mrsic would score a pair of one-time goals with one on the power play at 8:13 & 10:39 to make it 4-0 Tigers. Points belonging to McKenna, Shane Smith (Cessford, AB) & Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB). Next would be Wiesblatt's turn on the power play sniping his 15th of the season at 14:03 from Basha & McKenna. Twice more the Tigers would after as Rhett Parsons (Cremona, AB) would join in on the action his 4th of the year at 15:35 from Harsanyi & MacKenzie. While Vasyl Spilka (Liberec, CZE) would get his 3rd of the year with just nine seconds left in the period to make it 7-0 Tigers heading to the 3rd.
Scoring would would continue earely just 40 seconds into the third as Hayden Harsanyi would fire home his 6th of the season beating relief goaltender Armaan Kaila to make it 8-0 Tigers. Spilka would respond with his second of the night Bogdans Hodass (Jelgava, LAT) and Matt Paranych at 2:27. Hunter St. Martin would net his first career WHL hat-trick shortly afterat 3:22 from Wiesblatt & McKenna. Nate Corbet (Calgary, AB) would get in on the action with his 2nd of the season at 6:03 from Parsons & Kadon McCann (Cochrane, AB) and Hayden Harsanyi would score his first shorthanded goal of his WHL career on a breakaway at 10:01 to cap off the scoring for the Tigers making 12-0.
The Americans would finally solve the Tigers as Jake Sloan would bang home a rebound on a Tri City power play to break Zach Zahara's shutout bid at 12:07.
With the win, the Tigers move to 24-12-2-0 on the season, maintain their ground on Red Deer & Swift Current in the Central Division leading in first place.
Next up for Medicine Hat, an afternoon matinee with the Spokane Chiefs with puck-drop set for 4 PM.
