Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - A career night for Tomas Mrsic along with 22 goals for by the Medicine Hat Tigers in the last two home games leads to a 10-4 victory Sunday afternoon over the Spokane Chiefs.
But despite the score it would be the Chiefs started off on a fast pace against the Tigers playing the third game of a three-in-three this weekend. Late on a Spokane power play, Berkly Catton would fire his 24th of the season past Tigers goaltender Ethan McCallum (Brandon, MB) to break the seal in the first period making it 1-0 Chiefs at 5:31. The last five minutes would see three goals scored, two by the Chief back to back as Ty Cheveldayoff would re-direct his 5th of the season at 16:07 then at 18:27 Brayden Crampton would sneak a shot through McCallum to push the lead to 3-0. Tomas Mrsic (Surrey, BC) would score his third goal in two games, one-timing a Vasyl Spilka (Liberec, CZE) pass to cut the Spokane lead to 3-1 with the Tigers first goal of the night. Shane Smith (Cessford, AB) would add a secondary assist to make it a two-goal deficit to the 2nd period.
The Tigers for the second straight night would put up a six spot in the middle frame and it started with a Gavin McKenna (Whitehorse, YT) one-timer from Mrsic to get the Tigers within one at 3-2 just 57 seconds into the second. 2:14 later at 3:07, McKenna would be at it again as he takes a Shane Smith (Cessford, AB) beating Michaluk high glove to tie the game at 3-3. Reid Andresen (Saskatoon, SK) would also contribute on the second straight McKenna goal. Spokane would regain the lead at 9:08 as reining Player of Week Chase Bertholet would beat Zach Zahara to give Spokane a 4-3 lead from Conner Roulette.
28 seconds later, Hunter St.Martin (Edmonton, AB) would be rewarded a penalty shot and he would make no mistake to give the Tigers and clean slate moving the score to 4-4. The goals would keep coming from the homeside as Oasiz Wiesblatt (Calgary, AB) would beat Michaluk on another one-time shot from McKenna & St.Martin to give the tabbies their first lead of the afternoon at 5-4. A check-from-behind penalty from Ty Cheveldayoff on Vasyl Spilka would give the Tigers a five minute power play and Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB), would make it 6-4 on this 17th of the season from Shane Smith & Tyler MacKenzie (Red Deer, AB) at 14:26. Another power play would follow as Basha would again cash in at 18:59 for a 7-4 lead from McKenna & Mrsic, along with a three goal lead to the third period.
More of the same as the goals kept on coming for the orange and black as Mrsic would fire home his 5th point of the night and 10th of the season 45 seconds into the third from Smith & Basha. Marcus Pacheco would score his first goal as a Tiger at 4:23 from MacKenzie & Bogdans Hodass (Jelgava, LAT) and 34 seconds later, Dru Krebs (Okotoks, AB) would break-in for his 3rd of the season from Kadon McCann (Cochrane, AB).
Zach Zahara in relief would make 24 saves for the win for the Tigers, while the power play was a perfect 2/2 while the penalty kill went 2/3. The Tigers are now 25-12-2 atop the Central Division standings heading into the January 10 WHL Trade Deadline on Wednesday.
