Tigers Score Three in Ninth, Take Series Opener 5-2

Aberdeen, MD- In a game that stayed tied until the ninth inning, the Aberdeen IronBirds fell to the Connecticut Tigers, 5-2.

Tanner Chleborad retired the first three batters he saw, with some help from the IronBirds defense. Hector Veloz put out Brett Pirtle with a nifty backhanded stab and a toss to Chleborad and Riley Palmer had a diving catch to retire Ross Kivett.

The IronBirds then got on the board in the bottom of the first. Oswill Lartiguez singled to start the inning and advanced to third after a groundout to the pitcher from Justin Viele and a groundout to the second baseman by Austin Anderson. Alex Murphy grounded to the shortstop Domingo Leyba with two outs, but the throw to first was dropped, which allowed Lartiguez to score and the IronBirds had a 1-0 lead .

Aberdeen struck again in the bottom of third, as Jamill Moquete hit an opposite field home run to right field, giving the IronBirds a 2-0 lead.

Connecticut responded in the top of the fourth. With a runner on first and third, Kasey Coffman hit a sacrifice fly to left. Moquete had the throw on target to Tanner Murphy, but Murphy dropped the ball applying the tag. The Tigers tied the game later in the inning courtesy of an RBI single from Franklin Navarro.

Tanner Chleborad was replaced in the sixth inning after allowing five hits, two runs, one earned run, and striking out five. Matt Trowbridge came on in relief. He only faced seven batters in the game, but all five of the outs he recorded were strikeouts. Trowbridge was replaced by Matthew Grimes with two outs in the seventh inning.

The Tigers broke the tie in the top of the ninth off of reliever Ivan Hernandez, scoring three runs. Rashard Brown hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Steven Fuentes. In the next at-bat, Brett Pirtle hit a two-run home run into the IronBirds' dugout, giving Connecticut a 5-2 lead.

Connecticut reliever Josh Laxer retired the IronBirds in order, giving the Tigers a 5-2 victory over Aberdeen.

Johan Belisario earned the win for the Tigers, while Matthew Grimes took the loss, his second of the year.

The IronBirds and the Tigers play the middle game of the series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
