Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Delayed Doesn't Mean Denied
The IronBirds completed a two game sweep of the Brooklyn Cyclones last night, beating the Mets' affiliate by a score of 5-2. The Cyclones jumped on IronBirds' starter Pat Connaughton in the first inning, scoring a run on two hits and a walk. Fortunately for Connaughton, the IronBirds responded with three runs of their own, as Jay Gonzalez, Justin Viele, and Austin Anderson would all come in to score. With the IronBirds up 3-1 heading to the second inning, the game would be halted due to rain. The delay lasted two hours and 16 minutes. Max Schuh pitched for the IronBirds once the game resumed. He went two innings and earned his first professional win in his debut. Nik Nowottnick and Derrick Bleeker finished the night for the IronBirds on the mound, with Bleeker earning his first save of the season.
The Wizard of Oz
Oswill Lartiguez was a defensive replacement for the IronBirds in center field in the fourth inning. He had a huge night, as he was 2-for-2 at the plate with two triples and a run scored. Lartiguez is the fourth IronBird to hit two triples in a game and the first to do it since Kipp Schutz accomplished the feat on July 5, 2010 against the Lowell Spinners.
Viele Coming Up Big
Justin Viele has become a mainstay for this IronBirds' team. Defensively, he has been outstanding. In last night's contest, he helped turn a crucial double play in the seventh inning on a nifty back handed flip to second. He also had two RBIs and a run scored in last night's contest, despite being held without a hit. Viele has seven RBIs and eight runs scored in the month of July, helping Aberdeen to a 12-12 record so far this month.
Nowottnick Turning Up the Heat
IronBirds' pitcher Nik Nowottnick had another strong outing last night. He pitched four innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits while claiming two strikeouts. In his last four outings, spanning 10.1 innings, from July 8th through last night, Nowottnick has not allowed a run and has given up a total of five hits and four walks, striking out seven.
On the Mound Tonight...
Aberdeen will send RHP Tanner Chleborad to the mound tonight. He is 1-1 on the season with a 2.35 ERA.
