Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - With Santa Claus in the house for "Christmas in July" and the first 1,000 receiving "Ugly Christmas Sweater Jerseys" the Lowell Spinners found themselves on the "not nice" list, as they fell to the Hudson Valley Renegades, 9-3, Thursday night at LeLacheur Park.
It was the Spinners third straight loss to start the season-long eight-game homestand.
Lowell (17-23) broke through first, plating a run in the bottom half of the first inning. Danny Mars led off the inning with a single, taking second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on Sam Travis's RBI single to give Lowell a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived however as the Renegades took advantage of some fortunate luck on seeing-eye singles to get to Kevin McAvoy for five runs on six hits before Enfember Martinez came on to strike out Hunter Lockwood to end the inning.
The Spinners had a chance to cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning, but Jordan Procyshen was thrown out by about 12 feet at home to end the inning and it was all Hudson Valley from there.
With Ty Buttrey on to start the third inning, Hudson Valley (29-11) plated three additional runs. A one-out walk by Bralin Jackson got the inning started. Jackson stole second and scored on a single by Clayton Henning. An infield single and an error followed, scoring Henning. A Braxton Lee single plated Wil Dominguez and extended the Renegades lead to 8-2.
Lowell would plate a run in the third, with a Travis double and Jordan Betts RBI single accounting for the offense.
Hudson Valley plated a run in the seventh, the run scoring on a Buttrey balk, before the Spinners plated a run of their own in the eighth on a Mauricio Dubon RBI single, but Lee made a sensational leaping grab in centerfield to rob Bryan Hudson of extra-bases and likely two runs to end the inning.
Offensively, the Spinners had 12 hits but were unable to capitalize the way the Renegades were, stranding eight men. Travis, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games, led the way with three hits, while Dubon, Mars and Hudson all had two-hit games.
More the victim of a high BABIP than anything, McAvoy (0-1, 5.87) allowed the first runs of his professional career, allowing five runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings. He struck out two. Martinez struck out the only batter he faced before giving way to Buttrey, who allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks. He struck out five. Ryan Harris pitched the final two innings, keeping the Renegades off the scoreboard while allowing just one hit.
Lowell will again look to pick-up their first win of the homestand Friday night. It's a Coca-Cola Friday Night Fireworks, as the Spinners players wear special March of Dimes themed jerseys. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Danny Mars poster, while Reggy the Purple Party Dude will be on hand to entertain. First pitch from Aaron Wilkerson (1-0, 1.50) is set for 7:05.
