Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Medicine Hat, AB -- Just 24 hours after a massive victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings, the Medicine Hat Tigers were back in action Saturday as they entertained the Swift Current Broncos. The Tigers were looking to close the gap on an idle Edmonton team to just 2 points in the playoff race.

In the opening period the Tigers seemed to be a bit sluggish out of the gate as a more rested Broncos team took advantage of the situation. Nick Schneider was forced into some tough situations in the opening period, making good saves to keep the Tabbies in it early. Jon Martin, who started a big scuffle the last time these two teams met, opened the scoring for his 38th of the season capitaizing on a Tigers turnover. Martin would add a power play marker late in the period off a rebound to increase the lead to 3-0 heading into the intermission.

Medicine Hat jumped out of the gate in the second period with a better showing, outshooting the Broncos 17-9 in the frame. Taz Burman, who had only 1 victory in his last 9 starts was great in the frame stopping the some tough shots and getting some help from his red friends behind him. Chad Butcher would snap the shutout with his 24th of the season as he cleaned up a rebound off a Clayton Kirichenko point shot. Glenn Gawdin restored the 3 goal lead with a power play marker as defenseman Artyom Minulin found Gawdin back door for an easy tap in. But before the period would end David Quenneville had a blast on a 5 on 3 man advantage, which sent the water bottle flying.

The Tigers were looking for some more comback magic in the cannister and it almost came to fruitition when Max Gerlach scored his 29th of the season, picking the top corner on Burman to cut the lead to 4-3 with 8 minutes left. Medicine Hat led by Butcher, Mason Shaw and Matt Bradley gave it all they had as the Tigers pulled their goalie with 3 minutes left but couldn't get the equalizer and eventually would fall 5-3 to the Broncos.
