Wheat Kings Rally Sinks Warriors

Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings and Lethbridge Hurricanes remain deadlocked atop the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference with two weeks remaining in the 2015-16 regular season.

While the Hurricanes were busy beating the Blades in Saskatoon, the Wheat Kings were putting the touches to a dramatic come from behind win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors at Westman Communications Group Place.

Trailing 3-2 in the third period, the Wheat Kings struck for four goals in the final six and a half minutes of the third to beat the Warriors 6-3.

Reid Duke scored twice, including the winner with 2:29 to go as the Wheat Kings kicked off the weekend home and home series with Moose Jaw.

"It sure felt like a playoff game, as do all the games down the stretch usually feel like,"Duke told Bruce Luebke on CKLQ's post-game show, "This was a really big game for us to come out on top of."

Jayce Hawryluk, Stelio Mattheos, Duncan Campbell and Nolan Patrick rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who improved to 41-18-2-2 on the season. Patrick's goal - his 39th of the season - gave the 17-year old center goals in fourteen of his last 15 games. Linemate Tyler Coulter picked up two assists, extending his point scoring streak to thirteen games.

Dryden Hunt with two and Brett Howden scored in a losing cause for the Warriors, who host Brandon Saturday night.

Veteran Jordan Papirny turned aside 20 shots in posting the win and moving past Byron Penstock and into third place on the the club's all time minutes played by a goaltender list. Zach Sawchenko meanwhile had 51 saves in the Moose Jaw net.

Following Saturday's game in Moose Jaw, the Wheat Kings will play the Pats in Regina on Sunday night, before facing the Blades in a home and home series next weekend.
