Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Right fielder Luis Montanez and first baseman Mike Cervenak combined to go 6-for-9 with two doubles, one homer and five RBI as Norfolk posted its first win over Indianapolis in six tries -- a 7-6 decision -- Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field.
The Tides improve to 7-10 overall, while the Indians fall to 11-7 on the season. Indianapolis is now 5-1 against Norfolk in 2007 after sweeping a four-game series at Harbor Park earlier in the month and splitting the brief two-game series at Victory Field.
Montanez finished 3-for-4 with a two-run dinger and RBI double, while Cervenak went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and run-scoring double. C J.R. House, LF Jon Knott and CF Ruddy Yan added two hits apiece for the Tides, who collected a season-best 15 base knocks on the afternoon.
The affair was even until the visitors plated two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Montanez's second dinger of the campaign accounted for both runs in the fourth, while the fifth was highlighted by House's RBI double and Cervenak's run-scoring bloop.
Indianapolis threatened late, but couldn't get over the hump. The Indians left the bases loaded in the seventh and put the tying run at second base with one out in the ninth, but Tides RHP Cory Doyne (1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) escaped the jam for his fifth save of the campaign.
Indians C Ryan Doumit, the International League's top hitter at .415, finished 1-for-3 with a 405-foot blast which bounced off the sidewalk in right center. CF Nyjer Morgan, 3B Russ Johnson, DH Luis Matos and 2B Luis Ordaz managed two base knocks each for the Tribe.
The Indians plated one run in the first, second, sixth and seventh frames before Ordaz roped a two-run single to left center in the eighth.
Norfolk RHP Nick McCurdy (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 SO) worked the fifth and sixth frames for his first win of the season. Tribe LHP Shane Youman (5.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO), who avoided a loss in his final 21 Minor League outings a season ago, was pinned with the setback and is now 0-3 on the year.
Indianapolis will enjoy Thursday off before diving into an eight-game road trip at Ottawa and Pawtucket. The Indians and Lynx square off in a four-game series Friday-Monday before the Tribe and Red Sox do battle in a four-game set May 1-4.
Indianapolis returns to Victory Field on May 5. The 10-game homestand will include two contests vs. Louisville, four tilts against Syracuse and four affairs Ottawa. Tickets are available by visiting the Victory Field Box Office at 501 W. Maryland Street, going on-line at www.IndyIndians.com or calling Ticketmaster at 317-239-5151.
