Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, KY -A ninth inning rally was not enough for the Bats (9-10), as they fell 5-1 to the Richmond Braves (11-5) Wednesday afternoon. Today was the first Education Day of the season at Slugger Field, as 6,094 fans made it out to the ballpark for the 11:05 a.m. game.

Louisville managed only five hits for the game and committed a costly fourth-inning error, which yielded two unearned runs. Left fielder Tyrell Godwin appeared to have run down a Willie Harris fly ball to deep left field, but he failed to secure it in his glove on the warning track, allowing Harris to reach third base. Harris would later score on a Martin Prado sacrifice fly. The Bats have committed six errors in their last three games.

First baseman Joey Votto got Louisville's ninth-inning rally started with a one-out single to right field. Aaron Herr followed with a double off the center field wall scoring Votto. The Bats were unable to keep the momentum going as center fielder Dewayne Wise struck out and right fielder Jeff Bannon grounded out to third to end the game. Bats' second baseman Jeff Keppinger tried to spark the Louisville offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, but got little help.

Richmond left fielder Bill McCarthy laced a line drive, solo home run into the Dean's Milk Home Run Terrace in the sixth inning to put the Braves up 3-0. McCarthy also had a double in the fourth. First baseman Carlos Mendez went 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run in the ninth.

Bats' pitcher Homer Bailey (1-1, 1.69) earned his first loss of the season. Bailey gave up one earned run on four hits, but the Bats were unable to provide any offensive support.

RHP Buddy Carlyle (2-1, 4.66) fanned seven Louisville batters and gave up zero runs and two hits on the way to his second win of the season for the Braves. For the game, Richmond pitchers had a total of 12 strikeouts.

Louisville's next game will be on Friday, April 27 at Syracuse following an off day Thursday. The Bats' road record stands at 2-4 on the year. LHP Mike Gosling (0-0, 2.25) will pitch for Louisville while the Chiefs will send RHP Ty Taubenheim (1-1, 4.11) to the mound in the first meeting of the 2007 season between the two clubs. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
