Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk committed three errors that led to three unearned runs as Gwinnett knocked off the Tides 4-2 Monday night at Harbor Park.
The Braves jumped out to an early lead off of Tides starter Jake Arrieta, as Wes Timmons drove home Freddie Freeman with a two-out double in the second inning to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. The Braves extended their lead to 2-0 an inning later courtesy of throwing errors by Robert Andino and Scott Moore.
Gwinnett starter Chris Resop kept Norfolk off the board through five innings, but the Tides rallied to tie the score in the sixth frame off reliever Scott Proctor (1-1). Josh Bell led off the frame with a single and eventually scored on a two-out double by Jonathan Tucker, and Joey Gathright followed with a looping single to center to bring home Tucker and knot the score at 2-2.
The Braves jumped back out in front in the seventh, as they loaded the bases with no outs against reliever Ross Wolf (0-1). Mitch Jones then hit a grounder that Bell could not handle at third base, allowing J.C. Boscan to score the go-ahead run. Wolf then induced a double play grounder off the bat of Barbaro Canizares that scored Matt Young and put the Braves up 4-2.
Proctor, Michael Dunn and Craig Kimbrel finished the contest strong for Gwinnett, as the trio retired the final 10 Tides batters of the game - six by strikeout - to give the Braves the series opening win.
Gathright led Norfolk's offense with two hits, two walks, two stolen bases and an RBI. Rhyne Hughes added a single in the contest to extend his International League leading hitting streak to 11 games.
Arrieta turned in another solid outing for Norfolk, as the 24-year-old allowed just one earned run in six innings of work. Arrieta struck out five and walked three, and now boasts a 0.50 ERA in three starts this season.
The Tides and Braves will continue their four-game series on Tuesday night, with first pitch from Harbor Park scheduled for 7:15. Alfredo Simon (1-0, 2.00) will take the hill for Norfolk against Gwinnett right-hander Todd Redmond (1-1, 1.93).
