Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves defeat the Norfolk Tides 4-2 Monday night at Harbor Park in Norfolk, Virginia. It's the Braves second win in a row after a seven-game losing streak and it moves the Braves into a tie with Norfolk for third place in the International League South. Both teams are now 4-8 on the season and remain five games in back of the first place Durham Bulls. The Bulls are now 9-3 on the season after an 11-2 win at Charlotte.
It Was Over When: Norfolk third baseman Josh Bell mishandled a ground ball from Braves leftfielder Mitch Jones with the bases loaded and no one out in the top of the 7th. The miscue allowed Braves catcher J.C. Boscan to score from third and break a two-all tie. Braves centerfielder Matt Young would later score from third for the fourth and final run on a double play groundout from Barbaro Canizares. It gives the Braves a 4-2 lead which would be the final.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Chris Resop has another fine outing in his third start of the season, but does not factor into the decision. His line: 5.0 IP, 5H, 0R/ER, 5BB, 5K'S. Scott Proctor entered in the bottom of the sixth and gives up two run to the Tides that ties the game. However, Proctor got the win, when the Braves break the two-all tie in the top of the seventh. For Proctor: 1.0IP, 3H, 2R/ER, 0BB, 2K. Michael Dunn and Craig Kimbrel were, again, in control in the late innings. For Dunn: 1.2 IP, 0H, 10R/ER, 0BB, 2K. Kimbrel got his second save of the season. His line: 1.1 IP, 0H, 0R/ER, 0BB, 3K.
At the plate: Wes Timmons went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. His double in the second with Freddie Freeman on third plates the first G-Braves run and became the first run given up this season by Norfolk starting pitcher Jake Arrieta. Centerfielder Matt Young was 3-for-5 and scored two runs; Rightfielder Gregor Blanco was 1-for-2 with two sacrifice bunts and shortstop Brandon Hicks is 1-for-3 with two stolen bases.
Knights Beat:
On the Mound: Jake Arrieta worked six innings and did not figure into the decision. His line: 6.0 IP, 5H, 2R/1ER, 3BB, 5K. Ross Wolf was credited with the loss, allowing the two unearned runs to score in the seventh. For Ross: 2.0 IP, 3H, 2R/0ER, 1BB, 1K. Left-handed veteran Albert Castillo pitched a scoreless top of the ninth: 1.0 IP, 0H, 0R/ER, 1BB, 1K.
At the plate: Centerfielder Joey Gathright is 2-for-3 with two stolen bases. First baseman Ryne Hughes went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
On Deck: Gwinnett and Norfolk face off in game two of the four game series at Harbor Park Tuesday night. First pitch set for 7:15 p.m. Braves RHP Todd Redmond (1-1, 1.93 ERA) is scheduled to make his third start of the season. The Tides will counter with RHP Alfredo Simon (1-0, 2.00 ERA).
