ThunderBolts Shutout in Middle Game at Southern Illinois
May 18, 2019 - Frontier League (FL) - Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
MARION, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners hit two home runs and the ThunderBolts struggled to hit with men on base throughout a 5-0 loss to the Miners at Rent One Park Saturday night.
The Miners (4-4) started the scoring in the second inning. Anthony Brocato hit his first of two triples in the game and scored on an Arturo Nieto single. Cletis Avery, who had the game-tying and winning hits on Friday night, hit the first home run of his career to push the lead to 3-0.
The ThunderBolts (3-6) had many opportunities to get back in the game but couldn't capitalize. Shane Carrier tripled with one out in the second but was stranded at third base. In the third, Joe Becht singled and Brynn Martinez doubled to put runners at second and third with no outs but the Bolts couldn't find the big hit to get them in. They once again had two in scoring position with one out in the fourth thanks to hits from Dash Winningham and Patrick Mathis but they were stranded.
In the game, the ThunderBolts went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. They didn't threaten over the final four innings.
The Miners put the game on ice with a two-run homer in the fifth inning from Chris Iriart, making the final 5-0.
Austin Dubsky (1-1) pitched in an out of trouble all night and earned his first win of the year for Southern Illinois with six shutout innings. Chris Washington (0-2) allowed five runs in six innings and took the loss in his first start for the ThunderBolts.
The series wraps up as the Bolts try to avoid the sweep on Sunday evening. Adam Oller (1-1, 0.69) gets the start for the ThunderBolts against Southern Illinois's Ryan McAuliffe (0-0, 0.00). First pitch from Rent One Park is scheduled for 5:05 and the broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
