Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
CRESTWOOD, IL - The ThunderBolts scored four runs in the ninth inning and put the tying run on base but a five-run deficit was too much to overcome as they fell to the Schaumburg Boomers 7-6 at Ozinga Field Thursday night.
Despite trailing late, the ThunderBolts (9-10) held two early leads. In the second inning, Jamey Smart singled and eventually came home on a Jake Hirabayashi sacrifice fly. After Matt McGarry tied the score with a solo home run, Dan Robinson responded, hitting a homer of his own to give the Bolts a 2-1 advantage.
The longball again squared things up as Quincy Nieporte hit a solo shot for Schaumburg.
The score remained at 2-2 until the eighth inning, when the Boomers broke through. They batted around in the inning, getting another home run from Brett Milazzo and a two-run hit from Willy Garcia to pull ahead 5-2.
Two more runs scored in the eighth as the Boomers knocked out three more hits.
The score was 7-2 to start the bottom of the ninth but the ThunderBolts came out with four straight hits. Nikola Vasic picked up an RBI to make it 7-3 and a Schaumburg error resulted in two more runs scoring. The tying run was at first base with no outs but Darrell Thompson came out of the bullpen and shut the door, retiring the last three batters to protect the 7-6 score and send the Bolts to their second straight loss.
Andrew Cartier (1-0) picked up his first win of the year out of the bullpen and Danny Zardon (1-1) allowed three runs and took the loss. For Thompson, it was the third save.
After wrapping up their season-long home stand with a 4-6 record, the ThunderBolts will hit the road for a six-game road trip that begins Friday night in Evansville. Miguel Ausua gets the game one start for the Bolts with a 6:35 first pitch. Links to the radio and video broadcasts can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
