Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners could not keep the Schaumburg Boomers' offense down on Friday at Wintrust Field in suffering a 12-0 loss in the series opener.

The Boomers used a leadoff single by Brett Milazzo and an RBI double by Matt McGarry to take an immediate 1-0 lead in the contest, but Zac Westcott (2-1) would minimize the damage, and keep the game 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning. That's when the Boomers broke the game open by scoring four runs to take a 5-0 lead on a home run by Nick Ames, a two-run triple by McGarry, and a wild pitch.

Quincy Nieporte led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run, and the Boomers would plate an additional run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly for a 7-0 lead. Nieporte would go deep again in the seventh inning against Blake Stelzer, making the score 8-0 Boomers, and Schaumburg would complete the scoring in the eighth, as Clint Hardy and McGarry hit two-run home runs in the frame for the final 12-0 score, with McGarry's completing a cycle at the plate.

The Miners were unable to plate a run against Boomers starter Ryan Middendorf (2-1), who worked eight innings and scattered eight hits while striking out five for the victory, or Kristian Scott, who struck out two in the ninth to seal the lopsided result.

Southern Illinois will look to bounce back in the middle game of the series on Saturday, June 19, at 6:00 p.m.
