New Mexico Thunderbirds News Release
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., January 10, 2007 - The defending NBA Development League Champion Albuquerque Thunderbirds will host their second annual "School House Jam" on February 6 at 10:30 a.m. as the Thunderbirds play host to the Bakersfield Jam at Tingley Coliseum.
"School House Jam was the most entertaining and educational game last season," Team President Billy Widner said. "The game entertained more than 3,000 local students from high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools throughout the Albuquerque area."
Some of last year's educational events included everything from geography to science games, as well as the Albuquerque Police Department's party patrol lessons on underage drinking, followed by an imaginative version of mascot basketball, preformed by local mascots. This year the event only looks to grow in size and popularity.
"We will have several mascots on hand for another Mascot Game this year. Newspapers in Education will also sponsor a literacy timeout for the attendees, as well as provide an educational workbook for each student in attendance," Widner said. "Every school can use this as a way to reward students who achieve reading goals or maintain exemplary attendance. It is truly a day they will remember."
The NBA Development League includes the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (N.M.), Anaheim Arsenal (Calif.), Arkansas RimRockers (Little Rock), Austin Toros (Texas), Bakersfield Jam (Calif.), Colorado 14ers (Broomfield), Dakota Wizards (Bismarck, N.D.), Fort Worth Flyers (Texas), Idaho Stampede (Boise), Los Angeles D-Fenders (Calif.), Sioux Falls Skyforce (S.D.) and Tulsa 66ers (Okla.).
