TRENTON, N.J. - The Bowie Baysox closed out their six-game road trip with a 5-2 loss to the Trenton Thunder at Waterfront Park Thursday night. Baysox starter Chorye Spoone gave up three runs in 3.2 innings to end a 15-game unbeaten streak, as he walked a career-high eight batters and hit three. Ironically, Spoone had a no-hitter going when he was pulled from the game.

Spoone was out of control from the get-go, with a strange bottom of the first inning in which Trenton sent eight batters to the plate and scored two runs on no hits. He hit leadoff hitter Justin Christian, who stole second base before Spoone walked Austin Krum. Spoone then loaded the bases by hitting right fielder Daniel Brewer and traded a run for two outs as catcher Austin Romine grounded into a double play that plated Christian. Back-to-back walks to Corban Joseph and Marcos Vechionacci re-loaded the bases before a third consecutive walk to outfielder Damon Sublett gave Krum a free pass across the plate for a 2-0 lead. Shortstop Luis Nunez flied out to center field to end the inning.

Spoone recovered somewhat to retire seven batters in a row after striking Christian again in the bottom of the second inning. But, with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Spoone unraveled again, issuing four consecutive walks to third baseman Justin Snyder, Christian, Krum and Brewer with Snyder scoring for a 3-0 Trenton lead on the fourth walk. Right-hander Wynn Pelzer came on in relief after the run scored, and finished the inning by inducing Romine to ground out to first base.

The Baysox finally broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning, when center fielder Xavier Avery hit a one-out home run to right field. It was Avery's first homer since the 20-year-old was promoted to Double-A last week.

Designated hitter Joel Guzman drew a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh inning and moved to second base when third baseman Brandon Waring was hit by a pitch. Catcher Caleb Joseph hit a single up the middle of the diamond that plated Guzman to bring the Baysox within a run at 3-2.

Trenton undid Bowie's comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pair of home runs off lefty reliever Chad Thall by Vechionacci and Nunez that gave the Thunder a 5-2 lead that would stand for the rest of the game.

Bowie falls to 65-58 on the season, but retains second place in the Eastern League's Western Division, trailing Altoona by 6.0 games and leading Harrisburg and Akron for the final playoff spot by one game.

The Baysox return home Friday, as Richmond and Akron come to Bowie for a seven-game home stand with a doubleheader on Monday, Aug. 23. That home stand includes Fairy Tale Night on Saturday, Aug. 21, with kids' favorite fairy tale characters available for a meet-and-greet before the game. Fans can also catch the Baysox for a record-low price of one dollar on Wednesday, Aug. 25 with a coupon that can be printed out from Baysox.com.
