New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats roared back and the bullpen held on for a 7-6 victory over Richmond to complete a three-game sweep. Wearing black and orange jerseys for the third-straight night, the `Cats continued to find ways to win against a Richmond team that is clinging to playoff hopes.
Rock Cats starter Deolis Guerra ran into trouble early on. After striking out Darren Ford to start off the game, Guerra then walked Brad Boyer before serving up an RBI double to Thomas Neal to put Richmond on the board, 1-0. Brandon Belt followed with a two-run shot over the right center field wall.
The Rock Cats answered back in the bottom of the first, starting with an RBI single by Juan Portes that scored Estarlin De Los Santos, who leadoff the inning by reaching base safely on an error by pitcher Clayton Tanner. Steve Singleton followed with an RBI single before Jair Fernandez knocked in Portes with a sacrifice fly that tied the game and ended the inning by resulting in a double play.
Darren Ford led off the fourth with a solo shot to left field that put the Flying Squirrels ahead, 5-3. In the bottom of the inning, the Rock Cats crossed the plate three times once again to take the lead for the first time of the night. Fernandez scored on a bases loaded walk before Chris Parmelee lined a single into right that knocked in two runs for the 6-5 lead.
Chris Cates added an RBI bunt single in the fifth for the Rock Cats.
Tony Davis (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the `Cats, limiting the Flying Squirrels to one run on one hit and three walks in two innings. Loek Van Mil fired 1 2/3 shutout innings in relief before handing the ball over to Billy Bullock, who closed out the game with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Bullock notched his 10th save of the season.
Mitch Lively suffered the loss after pitching just 1/3 of an inning and allowing a run.
