
Thunder swept by Rock Cats

(New Britain, CT)- The Rock Cats swept a doubleheader from the Thunder on Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium. New Britain (20-21) took the first game in a shutout 6-0. They won he second game by a 6-1 score.
In the first game, Tommy Watkins hit an RBI single in the second inning to give the Rock Cats a 1-0 lead. They added a run in the fourth on a solo home run from Alex Romero. New Britain opened up its lead with a four-run eighth including an RBI single from Danny Matienzo and a two-run double by Romero.
Matt Garza (2-0) pitched six shutout innings while striking out nine and scattering four hits to earn the victory. Danny Borrell (1-3) gave up six hits and five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.
In Game #2, the Rock Cats scored a run in the first inning and added three in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Denard Span had an RBI double and Doug Deeds added a two-run single in the second inning off of Thunder starter Jeremy King (2-2). Trenton (20-24) got a run back in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Bronson Sardinha. But the Rock Cats put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the inning as Romero connected on an RBI double and scored a run in the frame.
Romero finished the doubleheader with five RBIs. John Thomas (1-0) allowed just one run and five hits in five innings to earn the victory for New Britain. J.B. Cox tossed three shutout innings in relief for the Thunder.
The series continues on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m as Tyler Clipperd (1-6) will start for Trenton and face New Britain's Glen Perkins (1-3).
