Connecticut Defenders News Release
One night after surrendering a franchise record 23 runs on 26 hits, Three Defenders pitchers combined for a three hit shutout at Dodd Stadium on Tuesday night with a 2-0 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
Garrett Broshuis (2-1) worked out of jams in the second and third innings, stranding 5 Fisher Cats in those frames. He then settled down to combine with Joe Bateman and Billy Sadler for 6 no-hit innings to end the game. The Defenders got on the board in the 5th inning when Nate Schierholtz singled in Jake Wald for the first run of the game.
In the 7th inning, Connecticut looked poised to put some more runs on the board after back-to-back singles by Alex Requena and Randy Walter with nobody out. Those hits put runners on the corners. Reliever Rodney Ormand got Nate Schierholtz to line into a double play, and just when some may have thought Ormond may have been out of the woods, a 1-2 breaking ball found its way past catcher Curtis Thigpen, allowing Alex Requena to trot home with an insurance run.
In the 9th inning, Billy Sadler sat down New Hampshire in order for his 7th save, and capped off the shutout just 24 hours after surrendering a franchise record 23 runs. On Wednesday, the Defenders and Fisher Cats take to the diamond at 12:35 PM for the third game of the four game series. It will be a battle of lefties as the Fisher Cats send David Romero (4-3) to the mound to face Pat Misch (3-1).
