Fisher Cats Bats Come Back To Earth in Shutout Loss

Norwich, CT - One night after a record setting night at the plate when they scored 23 runs on 26 hits, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (16-26) were shut out and held to just three hits in a 2-0 loss to the Connecticut Defenders (25-17) Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium.
RHP Garrett Broshuis (2-1) threw six shutout innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when SS Jake Wald led off the inning with a double against LHP Kurt Isenberg (1-6). He advanced to third on a ground out and with two outs, RF Nate Schierholtz singled to drive him in with the game's first run.
Connecticut scored again in the seventh as CF Alex Requena and LF Randy Walter began the inning with back-to-back singles against Isenberg, knocking him out of the game. RHP Rodney Ormond came on and got Schierholtz to line into a double play to SS Manny Mayorson, as they doubled Walter off of first base. With two outs, Ormond threw a wild pitch that allowed Requena to score from third. Isenberg allowed both runs on ten hits in six innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
The Fisher Cats biggest scoring threat came in the third inning as 2B Brad Hassey singled to begin the inning. Mayorson struck out and then LF Adam Lind doubled to put runners at second and third with one out. C Curtis Thigpen, who went 0-for-4 to snap a nine game hitting streak, flew out to shallow right, not deep enough to score a run. After a walk to 1B Chip Cannon loaded the bases, CF David Smith grounded out to end the inning. Broshuis would retire the next eight in a row before allowing a walk to Smith in the sixth. RHP Joe Bateman retired all six hitters he faced in relief in the seventh and eighth and RHP Billy Sadler pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his seventh save.
Every member of the Defenders starting lineup had at least one hit as Connecticut had baserunners in every inning despite scoring just two runs. They left 11 runners on base throughout the game.
The teams will meet for the third game of their four game series tomorrow afternoon at 12:35 PM. LHP Davis Romero (4-3, 2.44) goes for the Fisher Cats against Connecticut RHP Pat Misch (3-1, 1.31). The series finale is Thursday night at 6:35 PM and then the Fisher Cats return home to begin a four game series against the Harrisburg Senators (Nationals) at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Friday night at 6:35 PM.
