July 20, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Allowing three runs to cross the plate in a five-out top of the seventh, the WhiteWings (29-23) fell to the McAllen Thunder (19-32) to lose Game 2 of the doubleheader.
Leading 7-6 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, closer Edgar Martinez recorded the final out on a strikeout but the ball went past catcher Gabriel Ortiz. To complete the final out of the game, Ortiz picked up the loose ball and fired to first, but the throw sailed into the outfield. The tying run scored on the error to make the score 7-7.
One batter later, it happened again.
Martinez struckout the batter which would have ended the inning, but Ortiz could not corral the wild pitch as it hopped all the way to the backstop and the go-ahead run scored and it was an 8-7 lead for McAllen.
Ultimately, the 'Wings fell 9-7 to the Thunder as the WhiteWings allowed three runs to cross the plate in a five-out top of the seventh.
McAllen raced out to an early 6-1 lead, posting a combined five runs in the third and fourth innings, but their lead was quickly erased thanks to six unanswered runs off of WhiteWings' bats.
Scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning - three of which came with two outs - the WhiteWings pulled to within one, trailing 6-5 thanks to Francisco Santana, David Peralta and Leivi Ventura RBI base hits.
The very next inning, the WhiteWings rallied again with two-outs as they seized a 7-6 lead. Brandon Decker recorded an RBI double off of the left-centerfield wall to tie the score. Two batters later, Decker gave the 'Wings the lead as he crossed home plate on a wild pitch from McAllen pitcher Justin Jordan.
Yet the 7-6 lead was lost in the top of the seventh in a stunning turn of events that saw McAllen take the lead after receiving five outs.
Edgar Martinez receives the loss (1-2, 1.74 ERA) while Justin Jordan received the win (2-7, 7.12 ERA).
