Powered by three home runs the Calgary Vipers (32-22) defeated the Edmonton Capitals (29-23) 14-7 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Trailing 4-1 in the second inning the Vipers used two three-run homers by Justin Tellam and Wilver Perez for a six-run inning and to take a 7-4 lead in the game. Calgary put the game away late with a five-run eighth inning and overall hit three big flies while collecting 18 hits in total. With the win the Vipers improved their lead in the North Division to two games over the Capitals.
Perez led the Snakes at the plate with three hits, four runs batted in, and three runs scored while Jimmy Rohan also collected three hits for three RBI.
Mark Michael (5-2) recorded the victory with six innings while striking out seven and not walking a batter. Out of the bullpen Saskatoon's Dan Morari tossed a perfect ninth inning including a strikeout while Andrew Arreola (0-2) took the loss after allowing ten hits and seven runs in an inning and a third.
Edmonton opened the scoring in the top of the first as Steve Brown hit a leadoff home run for a 1-0 advantage.
Calgary responded in the bottom of the inning when Wilver Perez doubled and Jimmy Rohan drove him in with a base hit for a 1-1 tie.
The Capitals retook the lead at 4-1 in the second frame as Enrique Cruz singled, stole two bases, Carlos Duncan singled in a run, Andrew Arreola laid down a sacrifice bunt while also reaching on a throwing error, Brown drove in one with a base hit, and Matt Rogelstad collected a sacrifice fly.
The Vipers again answered in the bottom of the inning when Chad Ehrnsberger and Drew Miller singled followed by Justin Tellam's fifth home run of the season to tie the game. Bryan Burke followed with a base knock, Mark Michael laid down a sacrifice bunt, Jonny Kaplan reached with a base hit, and Perez went deep for the eighth time this season for a 7-4 advantage.
In the fifth inning Edmonton cut into the lead as Rogelstad tripled and Brent Metheny collected a sacrifice fly for a 7-5 score.
Calgary got retook a three run lead at 8-5 in the sixth frame when Burke walked, Kaplan reached on an error, and with two outs Rohan collected a run batted in single.
Leading off the seventh Ehrnsberger went deep for the Vipers to increase the lead to 9-5.
The Capitals cut the lead in half in the eighth inning as Todd Linden was hit by a pitch, Metheny doubled in a run, and Cruz collected a RBI single for a 9-7 score.
Calgary added some insurance in the bottom of the frame when Louie Templeton walked, Kaplan singled, Perez drove in a run with a base hit, Rohan drove in a run while reaching on a fielding error, C.J. Ziegler singled to load the bases, Ehrnsberger walked for a RBI, Miller singled for a RBI, and Burke grounded out for a RBI and a 14-7 advantage.
This series continues on Thursday July 21st at 5:05 with a double-header featuring two seven inning games and it will also be Real Estate Night where Dan the One Man Band will be performing while the series concludes on Friday July 22nd at 6:30.
The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
