Trenton Thunder News Release
HARRISBURG, PA - Trailing early in Saturday's contest, the Trenton Thunder offense jumped in support of starting pitcher Joel De La Cruz in an 8-4 victory over the Harrisburg Senators.
Harrisburg scored an unearned run in the 1st inning before Greg Bird atoned for his fielding error with a mammoth solo homer to right field. The ball crossed three-quarters of the way up the videoboard on its way out of Metro Bank Park entirely to tie the game 1-1. Bird's shot was his sixth with the Thunder in just 19 games. Five of the six homers have been solo shots, and the lefty has just eight RBI in spite of the six home runs.
After a pair of runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning for Harrisburg, the Thunder responded with a three-run 3rd inning that put them ahead for good. After the first two batters reached, Jake Cave doubled home both Ali Castillo and Casey Stevenson to even the score 3-3. Then, after a ground ball advanced Cave to third base, a passed ball allowed Cave to come home to score and give the Thunder their first lead of the ballgame.
Trenton added a pair of runs in the 5th and the 9th innings to make it more comfortable down the stretch. The Thunder have scored 15 runs in the team's last two ballgames after scoring just 27 runs in its previous 11 games. As part of the 10-hit outburst, Trenton used multi-hit games from Cave (2-for-5, 2B, R, 3 RBI), Stevenson (2-for-3, 2B, 3 R, BB) and Castillo (2-for-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI). In his last 10 ballgames Ali Castillo is 17-for-39 (.436 AVG) with five BB (.500 OBP).
The Thunder, which had posted consecutive shutouts for the first time since June 3-4, 2009, had their scoreless inning streak snapped at 21.1 IP. With the victory, the Thunder secure a victory in the season-series and will go for the team's first sweep of the season Sunday. The final game of the three-game (and season) series is scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with a 1:45 p.m. Trenton Thunder pre-game show which can be heard on 91.3 FM or on www.trentonthunder.com.
